Couple Plasma TV Questions

When a plasma tv does not come with a tv tuner, what does that mean? I read that if you have a satelite box, you don't need a tuner, so what is the purpose of having one? Would I need one for watching dvds?

And one last question. What is the difference between 720p and 1080p?

I am looking at the:
Panasonic TH-50PH9UK 50" Plasma
Samsung 50" Plasma
Hitachi 50" Plasma

If I decide to go with LCD
Westinghouse 47"

You would need the tuner to be able to say... hook cable directly into the TV. You don't need it if you have digital cable or satellite.

At least that's what I remember from my days as a retail slave that sold them, I could be mistake or confused.

A "TV" without a tuner is a monitor.

The tuner is the part that, when you hook up an antenna or cable, allows you to tune into various channels. A satellite tuner is basically that, but external, and it just outputs video directly to the TV. A television without a tuner is similar to a computer monitor in that it doesn't do much itself except display the picture that it's fed.

If you only use a satellite box or a digital cable box, or are only going to use the television for DVDs, video games, and the like, you don't need a tuner.

The tuner will allow you to get signal off the "air" which oddly enough will give you the best picture because it is uncompressed (if you have a solid signal that doesn't break up or you might need a good antenna). Cable and Satellite compress the hd signals. You might also need a tuner depending on what your cable or satellite box puts out (most now have component video, dvi or hdmi connectors, but at least composite which won't give you an hd signal).

A tuner is another added cost to TV's, and since a lot of people have cable boxes anyways, there's not point in having one.

If you don't have hidef broadcasters broadcasting in a sight line to your location, you won't get broadcasts. Tuners are like chicken soup, can't hurt, don't expect much.
