Career Advice Please!!

I graduated from college this past May with a double-major of English and Political Science. Also I have Public Relations experience through working for the college's admissions department and through an internship at the Smithsonian. I've been doing the whole job search and application thing with not much luck. The PR world just has very few entry level positions. Anyway, what I'm looking at now is working somewhere that would be fun to work, but with low pay. Tomorrow I have a casual interview and walkthrough of a cycling related company - but for a customer service rep position that pays $12 / hr. Currently I'm really hoping to get this job and doing some freelance on the side, to get some extra income and get my foot in the door in the writing world.

So I guess I'm wondering - should I keep looking for a PR job (what I'm 'trained' to do but the environment is cut-throat but pays well) or should I go with something lower pay but more comfortable, which I could then do freelance on the side? High-pay and stressful job OR low-pay and enjoying my job??

Get you a job you will love getting up and going to every day. I have had both kinds of job - the one I love and the stressful, hateful ones, and believe me, having a job where you don't mind getting up in the morning makes working a heckuva lot easier!!

Take something lower paying for the moment. Having a paycheck is a good thing, even if the job isn't what you may want to do in the long run. There's no such thing as a permanent job, and even simple customer rep work involves dealing with the public, though obviously not in the same way as PR. At worst, you sharpen some skills and earn a few bucks; maybe have a little fun while you're at it. Meanwhile, keep looking for the job you really want and continue having this conversation with yourself to decide exactly what that job is. Bear in mind, too, that just because you go for the high stress job for a while, that doesn't mean you're wed to it forever.

You might try a non-profit. The pay is not as good as private, but they often need PR people. My wife did that for years.(she works in PR)

A few years in the trenches, you can command the better pay that companies offer....

+1

I have had both kinds of jobs before also. It seriously sucks to get up everymorning and drag arse to a job where you are not happy with what you are doing or who you are working for. Take your time and figure out what kind of career you want, even if it means taking a low paying job until you can figure it out.

Get the lower paying job for now and keep sending out your resumes! Who knows... you may love the PR business! You'll never know until you get into the game!

What's funny is that several people I've worked with have totally different degrees that the careers they are working in now. I was an HR/Business student and now I'm doing real estate managemnt stuff for the guv'ment!

Good luck!!
