Stupid dog owner story # 346

I'm riding with Bailey in the trike, and looking far ahead as we go. Way off in the distance I see two kids coming our way. They are standing on skateboards and are each being pulled by a dog. As early as possible I tell Bailey to bark and then I ring the very loud "ding-dong" bell. I'm announcing that a dog is going to pass in a trike, and you have lots of time to get ready. I'll even stop and wait if you want me to.
The kids see us and make sure the dogs are on their right away from us. But they stay on the skateboards being pulled by the dogs. Dumb! When we are close enough I see that the first dog is a huge pit bull, you know, the kind bred to have a high level of aggresion towards other dogs! Geez! What could possibly go wrong? ! I expect the dog to lunge at the trike of course, I ring the bell again and move as far away as possible to the right. There is plenty of open flat grass on my right so I can swerve off the pavement if needed. I expect the normal, typical, dog reaction, he will lunge at the trike,

DUH !

Do I even have to say what happened? .... I will anyway. The dog lunges from the kids right towards the trike on the kids left, while the kid is holding on to the leash. While the kid is standing on a rolling skateboard going maybe 10 mph! WHAM ! Kid on pavement face down hard. If the dog had travled about 2 feet more he would have put his feet on the side of the trike, he tried to do that. He would have put both feet squarely in the middle of the spinning spokes on the back wheel. There are two strong steel fender stays that are as strong as a chain stay around the wheel. Kind of like putting his feet in a wood chipper.

This is stupider than the guy that was pulled over while walking by a huge dog in the same way. We have a new first place winner ladies and gentlemen!

It's a wonder any of us made it out of childhood alive.

I need to know when to turn on my camera.

donnamb is right. I was pulled on a skateboard by a go-cart in total darkness, down the street. Nothing ever went wrong !!!!! Did it many times. No helmets in those days.

jsharr, that's awesome !!

He was OK, I stopped a little way past and looked. He was lecturing the dog.

No, he has a few dog friends that do that and we have to stop and take Bailey out to visit the other dog. Lots of dogs do something similar and just want to play. He would jump out to play with some of them but his four point harness holds him in the basket.
Some people hold the dog carefully, but a surprising amount don't, and they almost fall over. Or they almost lose control of the dog. The kids looked 18, but I really can't tell. You would think if you handled that dog for just a few days, you would realize he could easily pull you over, and lunge or run to another dog !!??

With my 150 lb Rottie I felt if he wasn't under voice and hand signal command, I wasn't going to be strong enough to control him physically.

Thaddeus was a good dog. He never gave me a problem and was very very well behaved. I wish he stayed with me longer than 12 years.

Sorry you lost him.

I don't imagine anyone can keep a 150 lb. Rottie from going where he wants to go by pulling on a leash. The ones that I know play with Bailey, other small dogs, and are very well behaved. I'll try and get some photos or a video. Bailey scoots backwards underneath them and out, when they come up and stand over him. It's funny. One of them lies on his back to wrestle with Bailey.

Rotties are pretty nice dogs tho, pitbulls are nice, but probably not a dog you want to take for a walk (they are one of the strongest dogs after all) and their inter-dog skills need work as well haha

My aunt has a Rottie-hound and a rottie-german shepherd. The rottie hound is ALL muscle, but shes a baby. The rottie-german shepherd isnt much different. I go over there to feed them sometimes when they are away for the day, the dogs just look at me and then once they are let out wanna jump all over ya n lick ya to death. Putting either on a leash and trying to walk them...NO thanks. not for me haha.

I will add one thing: their angry bark will send chills down your spine. I dont mean barking at a car going by, I mean the bark they let out when they dont like something happening outside. Made me wonder if someone was trying to break in... not that i was worried

I would have laughed at the kid personally. Pit Bulls are known for their incredible strength...He should have thought twice, I'm guessing he wasnt capable of doing so.
