What do you order at a bar?

I'm turning 21 in two weeks and need to know what the cool people order at bars. I hate beer, so that is out of the question! I drank wine growing up, but I never got to the point where I appreciated like most people. Martini? Mojito? Crown & coke?

Also, what should I not order? Fruity drinks?

Well, for one, learn to like beer, pick a good beer type, pale ale, dark beer, lager, whatever and drink it till you like it.

Secondly, unless you're a woman, gay, or very secure in your manhood (you can deal with a lot of teasing from friends) stay away from fruity drinks. Personally I have one every so often, but I also wear a kilt and face paint out to the bars...

Now when it comes to what drink to order, try a bunch till you find one you like. On the rare occasions when I do liquor instead of beer at the bars now a days I love me a vodka gimlet, thats mostly vodka, with a splash of lime juice and a lime twist or wedge. It is a sipping drink, not a drinking drink. Otherwise Mr. Toilet will be your friend at the end of the night.

Rum and Coke is normally a good starter drink. You can also try Jack and Coke, or Southern Comfort and Coke.

Long Island Ice Tea's are tasty, but if done right, 2 will have you completely drunk.

Another fun way to try new drinks is to order by color. Just tell the bartender you want a blue drink, (or a green one, or a red one, or whatever) if you like it, ask them what it is then you'll know for next time.

As for the 3 you listed, Martinis are a bit rough if you aren't used to them, Mojitos are great if you like rum, and crown and coke is always a decent choice, assuming you like Crown.

Develop a taste for beer and don't worry about what the "cool" people drink.

See that's the trap right there. What the COOL people drink. Alcoholic beverage companies spend a LOT of money to make their product cool. So resist sales pressure from the multinationals. That's the cool thing to do.

Seriously a lot of marketing effort goes into creating alcoholic beverages that are sweet which masks the alcoholic content and this leads to binge drinking. I'm sure you have heard this before but don't get sucked in by peer pressure to binge drink.

Try the fare from different micro breweries and fine wine. Thats the enjoyable side of the alcohol.

Regards, Anthony

Beer, or jack & coke, or a bourbon & ginger ale sometimes. Buy a good beer to start, and after 2 or 3, switch to Bud Light, you'll never know the difference.

Shirley Temple.

I almost always order wine or beer, so I don't know what to tell ya. I also agree to try out some of the excellent brew pubs out there. I think a lot of those establishments have higher levels of standards when it comes to the quality of taste in their food and brews.

Order yourself up a backbone, and think for yourself.

Alcohol + sheep mentality = a bad mix.

With that said, go for vodka and ginger ale. Never misses.

Dirty dry gin martini has always been one of my favorites, but it's not for everyone.

The important thing about the first legal bar trip is to not give in to peer pressure and gulp down everything put in front of you. I made sure that my trip for that occasion was quite low key. I had my best friend with me and that was it. We went to a small bar in a then semi-trendy part of town. I didn't drink more than two or three Abita Turbo Dog beers, and that was it. No out of hand drunken antics on my part, and no hangover the next morning.

If you have to drink at bars, you need to develop a taste for beer if you want to drink alcoholic drinks. It's the cheapest way to drink at a bar. Liquor drinks are expensive, and two or three of them get costly fast.

Gin & Tonic
Rum & Coke
Cranberry & Vodka

You'd probably like all three of those.

I stay away from mixed drinks. the sugar in the mixers will make for a killer hang over. I drink single malt scotch straight up, water back, generally. My other mainstay is the dirty vodka martini. My vodka of choice is monopolowa. Tell the bartender to just wave the vermouth bottle over your glass, or swirl the vermouth in the glass and then pour it out.

that all said. cypress had the best advice.

Never sully good sour mash with ...yeech....coke. Maybe an ice cube if you have to put somehting in it. But coke? Might as well put a chunk of pineapple in it and top it off with a little pink umbrella.

I'm only recently 21, so I my experience is very limited, but I've decided I quite like Jack and Coke.

Try lots of different beers. Beers vary a lot in flavor, as do people's preferences. My favorites at the moment are Boulevard Wheat and Blue Moon.

When I turn 21, I am going to order a Guinness.
I'm told Guinness on the tap is so much better. Until then, I guess I'm stuck with draught in a can . Or if I go to Canada sometime, I guess I'll try it out then. They're more nature about it up north

Oh yea, you're missing out if you don't try beer. Beer is great. I've been drinking wine with my parents for years, but I'm finding myself much more fond of beer (and less fond of wine). I love grains, always have. Beer to me, is an extension of the pleasure of eating grain. A guy at work makes his own brew. I'd like to give that a go.

I am the last person to give into peer pressure, never even gotten drunk. I'll be out with my parents at a fine dining restaurant my first time out.

I'm a beer guy, but if I'm drinking liquor, my standby is 7&7. Not too sweet, but drinkable.

I can drink anything, but that's where I go if I'm drinking mixed. I actually prefer a dark ale, and Sam Adams will do at most places. Guiness isn't bad, but I'm not nearly as enthralled with it as most people seem to be. Yeungling aint bad, especially their black & tan. Very few places carry Arrogant ******* on tap (or any other way) so I make do with what I can get. Might try a Mich. Amber Bock. It's very dark but not very heavy at all.

People that drink what someone else drinks just because someone else drinks it aren't cool.

Drink a few martinis and you'll be hooked. I'm a gin drinker, which means I'm a drunk.

Order what you like, and don't give a toot about what anyone else thinks about it. A friend of mine is a former Marine corporal. His buddies would always give him a hard time over his drink of choice, because they figured a guy like him would drink straight bourbon or some kind of rot-gut concoction of hard liquors. Nope.
Wine coolers. Nothing but fruity tasting wine coolers.

I know beer and scotch the best, but I'll drink whatever someone puts in front of me. I'm familiar with bourbon and gin, and I admit that I know squat about wine.

The best advice I can give you is this: The longer the line at the bar, the less complex your drink order should be. You, the barkeep, and one other guy who's already got a drink? Go ahead and order a Zombie. 40 people up at the bar on quarter draft night? Just get a cup of crummy beer and walk away.
