Video editing recommendations

My wife wants to cut and combine sections from her exercise DVDs and transfer them to her Ipod. Is there a good way to do this?

She has been looking at software, but from what I can tell, doing what she wants would require breaking the copyright protection. Downloading software from the internet that accomplishes this sounds like it would be just the ticket if you wanted trojans on your machine or a membership in a botnet.

She seems totally hell bent on this, so I'm wondering what my options are? Originally, I was thinking I'd just get some VGA to TV converter cables and let her do an analog copy from her computer to a DVD recorder, but then I found that she wants to edit what is copied and load it on the Ipod.

Handbrake [windows/mac] works for making DVDs into ipod files, and if you want simple editing use windows movie maker/imovie

To do this you can easily use Windows Movie Maker/Handbrake/ and possibly DVD decrypter. You can decide the necessity and or legality of the last part. There is no concern for trojans or whatever else you are talking about.
