what a heck is wrong with apple's iWork 'pages' word processor anyways?

okay..

This happened to me one night last week after writing/editing some stuff. I fell asleep and left my macbook to idle unplugged beside my bed. By morning the battery had been drained, the computer was off -- and all my editing work was gone. Unsaved. Never happened. Microsoft Word knows to autosave on it's own.. -so why does my 'pages' apple software seem not to?? I mean, it's pretty basic, right? Even the blogspot site knows to autosave -- unless you are editing something that was already posted - in which case you need to be SURE to save it manually. Pls, don't make the same mistakes I did. It is such a bad thing when you lose hours and hours of work - hours and hours of 'good' work.. but you know, when I ever I am made to redo lost work I always think of something else to add to it, but usually this comes at the expense of never getting around to redoing what it was I set out to redo. But o' well. -?

But yeah, what's up with the no auto save on the Pages WP? .. does any one know? And if there is an auto-save, why is it left disabled as the default setting?

thanks.

Look at Open Office, as well, and they have an Apple version It autosaves

Yeah.. I had the Apple MS Office 2003 or maybe '04 version on my brother's mac mini. But whenever I'd save a document using the PC version of MS Word on the computers at my school in order to transfer it to my mac mini - the Apple version of Word on my mac mini wouldn't be able to open it!! The only way to save stuff from the PC at my school to my mac would be to save it as a RTF file -- which would remove all of the paragraph spacing, so what I'd be left with would be a huge block of words undivided by paragraphs. It was maddening. And I didn't have internet on my mac mini so there was no other way to transfer files. But now I have a macbook, so all is well.. except for the apparent lack of an auto-save on their word processor. I feel the least they could have done would have been to warn me. But I had to learn the tragic way. Again. It made me sad. And filled me with useless rage (for a couple seconds anyways).

Look in the settings menu for the Word Processor, is there an option to autosave?

Well I still have Appleworks 6 on my eMac and its set to autosave. I have no idea why your iWorks isn't set to autosave.

I dunno..? I'm a writer of words - not a computer options knower type guy. -?

..no, I just did a search of ''auto save'' in the help bar for 'Pages.' Apparently there is a way to save a back-up file, which means that it keeps the version that you had saved previous to the most recently saved file. Which is nice. But there is nothing about auto-save. So I guess it doesn't exist? That's really ridiculous in my opinion. Really, how could they have forgotten something so basic?

Set up the following script:
Code:
property minutesBetweenSaves : 10

on run
	launch application "Pages"
end run

on idle
tell application "Pages" to save (every document whose name is not "untitled")
	return minutesBetweenSaves * 60
end idle

on quit
	quit application "Pages"
	continue quit
end quit
Also turn ON the following option in Pages "Backing up the previous version of a document when you save it".

Then go and give Apple feedback: http://www.apple.com/feedback/pages.html

You should be able to get it for free somewhere. Apple may even have it on their website.

Re iWorks open it up , go to preferences (usually under the program name menu) and then search through the preferences. I don't have iWorks so I don't know exactly where to look.

Can't stress this enough.

Of course I do programming work, so it carries over into my other work, so I'll be saving after every few lines... Ctrl + S isn't hard.

That is one thing Apple really needs to have, an autosave feature. Even saving when I remember, the autosave feature in both Word and Open Office has saved me plenty of times.

Apple is getting there. Time Machine is a good step in that direction. I just wish MS would put the usability of the snapshot function found in Windows Server 2008 into Vista, so people could set a schedule of having snapshots done, and perhaps a backup program being able to save those snapshots off onto another hard disk or tape.

Does your Macbook pro have Safe Sleep? Safe Sleep (or hibernate) writes out the memory's contents to disk and shuts the machine down. On wakeup, the Mac loads the memory contents and starts exactly where it was hibernated from.

I was quite pleased when I found that Vista has this enabled. I left a laptop in my backpack in suspend mode for a couple days, found that it quietly wrote its RAM contents to disk and shut down gracefully, allowing me to pick up exactly where I left off without a reboot.

Here is a hack to allow older models to hibernate at low battery life:

Did you look at Preferences? If Pages has an auto save feature, it's probably there.
