Filipinos invented the Yo-Yo as a weapon I believe. I suck with the tricks but I can throw it at somebody I guess. That could be fun depending on whom I am winging it at!

Hey Mr. Burglar, stop or I will use this!

*holds up Duncan Butterfly*

Don't make me "walk the dog" on your sorry arse, okay buddy?!

BTW, they were invented as a weapon.

Oh man, good timing. I was a participator in the Great Yoyo Craze of '99 (shuddup, I was 9 years old), and after seeing some videos on youtube, I dug out my Henry's Viper and tried it again. Nowadays kids are doing "offstring" stuff where the yoyo isn't tied onto the end of the string, you kinda spin it upwards and catch it as it falls on the string. Then somehow you can reel it back in if the string if the string gets caught in the mechanism. But I haven't really gotten to that stage yet.

I used to have this yoyo. Son of a gun would hurt your hand if you go too fast doing the tricks with it.

Uncanny...

Just yesterday I found a yoyo under my desk, no idea how it got there. Maybe the cat was planning a coup.

if you ever got nailed in the pouch with one....you'd know it makes for a mighty potent weapon.

Q. Did you hear about the cargo ship carrying 13 tons worth of yo-yos?

A. It ran into a storm...and sunk 15 times. :groan:

1899, it replaced the roll a barrel hoop down the street with a barrel stave mania of 1897.

While I can't attest truthfully that it was a craze, per se, I can recall a handful of my friends doing the yoyo thing in '99. I was a senior in high school, and obviously part of the 'in-crowd'.

The Yo-Yo is both a toy and a weapon.

As a practitioner of Filipino Martial Arts, I have heard of its use as a jungle weapon was well as a weapon to hunt animals. I have heard this from my grandmaster and others, so I tend to believe that it is real and not an urban legend.

From my understanding, the modern yo-yo was manufactured by a Filipino immigrant, Pedro Flores, who then sold the design to Donald Duncan (Duncan yo-yo's).

https://www.yo-yos.net/Yo-yo%20history.htm

Nonrelated trivia (this is Foo after all)... Duncan now also manufacture parking meters and power meters. I think they also manufacture gas meters, too.
