Is all attic insulation fiberglass?

I live in a converted garage apartment, and the landlord mentioned once he used to cheapest nastiest stuff for insulation. It is a fluffy gray, loose material that looks dumped onto the attic floor. Reason I ask is not sure if I want to take any OCD measures (like sealing off the attic entrance with tape). I don't like the idea that the dust in the air might be fiberglass leaking in from the attic.

No, they make cellulose insulation as well. The gray blown in stuff is often cellulose.

Yep, that's the stuff. Thanks. So it's OK to breathe it? Or at least at the level it might seep into my bedroom, I assume?

Usually the installation includes a vapor barrier. I doubt you are breathing too much of it. It generally is treated with quite a lot of chemical fire retardants, but I don't know if any are to be concerned about.

Of course you do. OCD requires that you take OCD measures to ensure your safety. 10 times over.

Check out recycled denim insulation. That is some pretty good stuff.

They make rock wool insualation too. It's made, in part, from recycled steel slag. Google Roxul.

This is hands down the worse material ever for a human to crawl through! Insulation makes you itch because it makes microscopic cuts on your skin and that is why it is red as well. The cellulose does not make you itch.
