How does one keep from getting too cynical?

Due to recent events (stupid job interviews, deaths in family, finding financing so I can pay for the classes I need to graduate in December), I have noticed I'm getting just grumpy and sour in general, an attitude I really don't like to have. Not just "get off my lawn" grumpy, but "Screw it, even the best cooked meal turns to poo in the end" grumpy.

In general, anyone have some good suggestions on curbing this attitude before it becomes ingrained?

I wish I could help, I gave over to the dark side ages ago.

You end up meeting people who appreciate the dark humour or hate you. I can live with that.

Life is what you make it. I personally enjoy a nice poo. Time alone, quiet, maybe read a little, end up feeling satisfied.

Joke em if they can't take a screw is kind of my mantra.

Watch Jerry Springer. You will realize things could be much worse.

Avoiding P&R is a good idea too.

I flip to MTv for a few...puts my life in perspective.

Then I go to karaoke and sing my face off. Helps me.

Seems like you should do that if you are getting to cyclical.

read a certain members cut & paste daily diatribes of fear, and realize that compared to his, your life isn't so bad after all.

hang in there buddy! It's all a matter of perspective. Check out the following book:

Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor E. Frankl

Gives you some great insight and tools to analyze and design your life to get the results you want. Helps you get rid of the "shoulds" in life that really hinder and stop people. Imagine this scenario of two guys working at the same position at the same company. They're both laid-off on Friday:

Guy#1 thinks, "Damn! What am I gonna do? It's all over. I'm not gonna be able to make my car and house payments and get thrown out on the streets. My wife and kids will leave me. What will my friends and family think? Boo hooo... let's drink..."

Guy#2 thinks, "Hey, this is great!, I get to collect unemployment for 6-months. I have time to take those night-classes I've been thinking of. I can finally start up that part-time business I've been thinking about. I can take the wife on a vacation!"

On the following Monday, reality and the future will be completely different for these two guys... all starting from the same event that "just happens".

You can't help what happens to you, but only you can make yourself miserable.
