OK Foo Medics .... Gall Bladder attack - have roommate not happy ...

Any suggestions for someone who is lying prone on his bed and has a gall bladder attack?

(personally - me - I would be off to the doctor's - but roomie is not insured).

And me, Google Queen, has read everything from (of course how to prevent it <cough> to drinking olive oil, herbal supplements and laxitives - while other sites advise against the previous and advise you to use their stuff. Pretty wide open here.

Best advise I've read so far is heat, rest and liquids.

Advise anyone? I have a HUGE baby in the next room!!!

Hi Tude-
Why are you not in the ER with him? Even if he's not insured, Federal law (Hill-Burton) requires that he be treated, regardless of insurance status. And there are about seven Hill-Burton obligated care facilities in Rochester- see this for addresses. That said, why do you think he's having a gall bladder attack? Has he had these before? If he does in fact have cholecystitis, he probably has gall stones. His GB should probably be removed if it's inflamed, but he needs to be evaluated! In the meantime, he should have nothing by mouth. Please don't mess with this- inflamed GBs can get infected and ultimately gangrenous.

Hospital.....Gall bladder can be a critical condition and hence they cannot refuse treatment. Worst case, they can write it off as charitable care. Happens all the time.

Dishonest.

Hospital. There is a General Hospital here and they waive those who cannot pay or only charge a small percentage according to income. Your friend can apply for assistance there, at the hospital. I hope you have one like we do.

Good luck.

Go to a Catholic Hospital. Catholic relief also has funds available for need base and they don't ask your religion.

Right- there's absolutely no need (and every reason not) to fake his name. For one thing, he's very likely to get admitted, and it's extremely dangerous from a patient safety perspective not to use his real name. They won't bite- promise! Just get him to the ER. Now.

Gall stones I presume? Off to the hospital, they can cause pancreaitis, which could kill him.

If your roomie is in need, please take him to a hospital.

Years ago when I was uninsured, I had to be hospitalized. I made it clear that I had no insurance and little money and asked that they only did what was medically necessary.

In all honesty I can't remember how it worked out (it was complicated, involved paperwork I didn't understand, and took months), but I didn't pay nearly what I thought I would or what the bills said. They'll work with him if he has no money -- they have no choice.

I would say get the friend/roomie to the ER and deal with the payment later.
