Is anyone having a great year so far?

I need some positive energy. Seems like the first half of the year hasn't done many people much good. Use this thread to gloat about how well things are going for you, but only if you've had a very positive year so far.

I live in a place I like.

I work at a job I like most of the time -- it's outdoors, with nice basic country people.

I pay cheap rent.

I am reasonably fit and healthy.

I bicycle almost every day and am on target to break 10,000km this year.

The booze, cigarettes and heart attack are but a distant memory.

I still don't own a car after more than 11 years.

In turn that means I have been able to build up this year an aluminium-framed MTB with disc brakes and mid-level components, AND a CF-framed Ultegra-equipped road bike from scratch -- both projects extending my knowledge of modern bicycle "technologies". Along with that, I have built up a nice cache of tools, and added Velocity Dyad rims to my tourng bike. Oh yeah, I also bought another MTB for my girlfriend, bringing to six bikes shoehorned into my place.

I am planning my next trip to Canada in August/Sept to visit someone who loves me, shares my passion for cycling, and is moving to Australia in a year's time to be with me.

Today's pay is the first with the new tax cuts for Aussies. My debt is minimal.

What isn't there to like about my life?

And no, I am not trading places.

Yeah, I'm diggin' this year. I have a ticket out!

You saps are stuck here paying $7.00 a gallon for diesel, $10 a pound for mealy hamburger and your mortgage company has just adjusted for the third time in six months. Your daughter is pregnant, your son is gay, and the family pooch is littering on your brand new sofa... from Rent-a-Center. And you feel sorry for me.

Why?

Meh, an ok year, no g/f (THANK GOD) and it will get better once i get ta f* out of this job i have.

Best decision i have made this year and possibly in my early-ish adult life: buy a road bicycle, i really mean it.

If i get this one job i interviewed for, my year will be complete, sigh...

Certainly one of my better years

I turned down two fantastic job offers to accept a fantastic grad school fellowship at the 11th ranked program in the U.S. My wife was actually enthusiastic about turning down the money to stay in school. My son has been an absolute joy. He'll be one year old this month. I sold my house in a crappy market without even listing it and still made a healthy profit. I bought a new house in a neat neighborhood in a really cool new town. My greyhound who had a leg amputated for cancer was given a 12 month prognosis 24 months ago and shows no signs of slowing down.

So I'd say it's been a damned good year. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to gloat.

Hell yes! An awesome, first snowboarding season under my belt, two trips to Costa Rica, a trip to Jackson Hole, lots of belly dancing, music lessons, working with artists, and lots of fun! Due to training, I feel a lot more fit and stronger than I did a month ago. Gawd, I love it when your muscles burn and you can feel them really well through your skin. Yah, I get off on that.

Yup, good year so far. It only keeps getting better.

Eh. It's certainly better than last year. Though last year ended pretty ****ing sour, so the start of this year was tainted. No trips to the emergency room yet this year though, so that's certainly a positive

Indeed, 2008 has been great so far. Started the year off in the deep jungles of southern Mexico, visiting the ruins near Palenque and San Cristobal de las Casas. Went back to Michigan on Lake Superior for a winter of studded tires and riding on the snowmobile trails (used 2.4" tires on an old mountain bike). There were cross country ski trails 1/2 mile from my office, so lunchtime skis were common. Then I was recruited by a company in sunny southern California; they moved me out here and put a hook in my office so I could hang my bike inside. Haven't filled my car since May. New girlfriend rides bikes and eats healthy, which is a huge relief, and she helped buy a tandem for us to use.

It's hard not to be happy when you're able to ride every day. Plus I had this guy guarding my bike:

well lets see. Started off the year as an underpaid swim coach, living below the poverty line, no health insurance, on food stamps, on various other social services that paid for heat. However we placed a girl top 25 nationally which was pretty sweet. Then had an unreal recruiting class including a few other national caliber swimmers so next years nationals will be a LOT of fun. But....

Then I decided to quit my coaching job, advise the tri club on campus, and just got hired for another campus job where I make 3.5 times as much as I previously did with health insurance and free masters! Now I can race again and can afford some upgrades to my bike (allez elite) or just a new bike all together which is probably going to be the case.

Currently I keep refreshing chainlove.com hoping for something good. On the list is a new road bike (possibly a cervelo soloist??), powertap, and new shoes. Oh and a car rack.

So things are improving at a rapid rate! And just got 3rd in a local duathlon

is this my 6-month checkup already?

absolutely! lets break it down.
  • the job has gotten better [project-wise, advancement-wise still not much room for growth, but i never work more than 40, so no complaints there]
  • i've reunited with some old friends
  • i bought a bike, that rocks
  • got a new car [the jellybean]
  • goal to buy a home before the year's out.
  • i'm in the best shape of my life [and getting better]
  • my last living grandparent has moved closer [due to some health setbacks, but still able to spend more time with her now, yah!]
  • finally dumped the guy that kept trying to put a ring on my finger [he was an idiot from the start, but couldn't we just have fun? seriousness? blegh. he cheated, and was going to buy the ring anyway, and hope i never found out . Ok so that was all before the new year turned over, but its still made this one better than the last!]

Last year: Job bleah, 20 year marriage ended, just sort of existing.

This year: Job still bleah, but new (and completely unexpected) in my life, and I feel wonderful.

Both years: Nowhere near enough riding miles, but I'm trying to fix that.

Put it all together - this year is going pretty damn well. Last year (and several before that) really sucked. The point: there is hope for you, UA.

Once I graduate (hopefully in December) and get decent employment, this year should be decent.

Looking forward to having the ability to hit more renfaires, and perhaps get enough cash together so I can get a decent synth [1] again for musical projects.

[1] 88 key Korg M3, although an 88 key OASYS wouldn't be bad either. When I have to plug it into the computer, I can run the synth while its connected to the computer with a VST plugin... a VST plugin with zero latency.

Cheating = red flag, middle finger to marriage proposal, honestly your ex sounds like he was living in his own world, hehe.

Anyone else have more good year good things going?

Your daughter is gay, your son is pregnant, and you find out that the Rats have been littering in your brown rice! The up side is we'll all be there some day to meet back up with you
