Ham Radio

Just wondering if anyone in the group is also a Ham rasdio operator?I'm new to bike riding and I've been riding a Actionbent tadpole trike for the last month.

Yep. KB1CKT, although I've been a bit inactive as of late. There are a number of people who are actually active while biking; and I think the majority of those are rocking 'bents. I know there is a group somewhere dedicated to such activity--but cannot remember it.

N9ZIL, also not real active lately. Keep debating about getting more involved but then always realize I don't have the money. So mainly just do skywarn.

yup. KC8UQX. I was really active on 2m for about 4 years (every day on the 146.880 repeater run by LEARA in Cleveland) and then my antenas started acting up and I haven't fixed them yet. I'm still a tech, but considering upgrading.

Yes, KF4LTM. I've never been too hardcore about it. Back in about 1995 or thereabouts, the girl I was dating (now my wife) and her family all were licensed and used it to keep track of each other. A couple of the local repeaters were almost non-stop with activity during the day. Cell phones have taken over alot of that, and I think it's to the detriment of the ham community. Cell phone traffic may be more private, but using the repeater doesn't have to be expensive, and once your radio is paid for, there's no additional expense.

I'm just a Tech, but my wife's sister's husband has whatever the top level license is, I think. It's a fun thing, and I'm hoping that once I finish school I can give it more time and money.

Reviving an old thread after a search. I got into ham radio 2 years ago. I got into the hobby for many reasons, two of which were bicycle related. We use ham radio operators for emergency communications at our road races. Cell phone coverage in the areas where we race is often nill. Also, we use commercial (part 90) VHF radios for race radio in the caravans, at headquarters, and at the start/finish. So it seemed a natural fit to become a ham.

This being said, very few of my cycling friends even know what ham radio is. One of my riding buddies and a few of my USA Cycling official buddies are hams, thats it. But yes, I do combine the hobbies. I carry my 2 meter HT on road rides quite often.

So, reviving the old thread three years later...any hams out there?

Both my parents were hams. Does that count?

I hear that quite a bit! True, the average age of a ham is up there.

I'm too young to be a ham, and too old to be a tweeter.

I was going to when I was on the C.A.P. but then switched my hobbies to chasing girls. I have many friends who hold licenses and still operate phone-to-ham repeater thingies.

Back in the day I started with citizen band and had a full wave ant on mah roof... till Hurricane Hugo took it down for me.

Ditto. I was into CB in high school and almost became a ham. Then the standard life changes happened.

Op had one post so either didn't like cycling after the first month or discovered there may even be a ham radio forum.

Or maybe he goes from forum to forum posting off topic banter. Oh well, I'll take ownership of the thread.

edit:BTW, there are lots of ham forums.
