Unnecessary Hostility?

Skip to bottom sentence if you don't want to read my experience/rant, please:

So basically I've noticed a continuing trend on bike forums which seems to reflect human nature: unnecessary hostility (as the title says).

At first upon reading various threads and seeing such hostility and sarcasm, I thought it was all in good humor and in fun (as most of it still seems to be), but then I realized that some people are just real big jerks.

Point in case: someone asks a questions about tire sizing issues on his new SE Lager in the Road Cycling forum, so before he starts to get flamed I suggest that he re-post in the fixed gear/single speed forum. It happens to be though, that he mispelled a word in his post, so I took it upon myself to fix the correction. Normally I would let it slide, but being an ex copy editor, I felt the need to correct this one person. I wish I wouldn't have.

This morning I receive a pm, to my delight as I never have before (lame, I know), just to be supremely bummed by this guy's attitude. I already deleted it, but basically it stated, "I came onto bike forums for info on bikes, not grammar. Get a life. But thanks for the info on WERE to post."

Hmm... Get a life? I don't already? I'll excuse his obvious neglect for the fact that I am a self sufficient person who's able to use the search function or google to answer such a mundane question as max tire size on a bike- whatever, but it's the end of the message that bothered me more. It was the fact that in a seeming compliment or recognition of appreciation he was acting like a child and purposely trying to either stand his ground on use of improper grammar or purposely vex me. And he told me to "get a life."

I'm only 20, yet I feel pretty bitter/jaded about the world already. That's not to say that I've lost all optimism, but living in the city (S.F), and constantly seeing/hearing **** go down on and around the bay: people losing lives over simple disputes that aren't even worth it, I mean really, come on, is it really necessary?

Sorry if this has become a rant, but my question to you guys is do you feel that there's a great deal of unnecessary hostility going on around these threads? I'm constantly going between the road cycling forums, single speed forums, and Foo forums, and although I enjoy reading them all, I've got to love you Foosters the best because it always just seems like happy times here. I have yet to see any real petty internet fire fights break out like I commonly see in the road forum but especially in the FG/SS forum... lol...

Thanks for reading, or not, and just wanted to say that I love you guys!

Dont get bummed about it. Spelling counts. I am patient with most misspelling except for my one pet peeve:

misspelling that creates a completely different word=FAIL

It's not exclusive to this forum. It's happened to some extent in every single forum I've been a member of in my lifetime and they're quite a few now.

The best is to just shrug it off, hard as it may be. Although for such a large forum, I haven't encountered a lot of hostility compared to how often I see where there might be potential for it.

Some people have a problem with sarcasm detection, some people have a problem properly expressing sarcasm in text, and some people are just having a bad day. But yeah, some people are just jerks.

Do you really think you should be correcting other people's misspellings, idiot?

sirpoopalot is just mad 'cause he's been on that chamberpot for ages and still can't seem to poop...

Foo rocks, spelling counts, and anonymity breeds contempt.

I say your only option is to stab him to deaf with a dangling participle.

Give me someone who gently corrects a person, over a thoughtless preck any day.***

Preck being misspelled on-purpose-like, else it be stricken.

I expect that kind of garbage on the Road Cycling forum. Best to either shrug it off, or (I might be reaching here), let a mod know. People with bad attitudes don't seem to be able to completely control turning it on and off at appropriate times.

Hahaha... I knew someone would catch my error. After proofreading it I shuddered at the fact that I fell victim to myself. lol...

I am opposed to unnecessary antagonism as well, but some people make really, really, profoundly stupid posts on a regular basis and it is always entertaining to see someone point it out. Honestly, the best observation about "'netiquette" I've ever read is that on the 'net, it is perfectly acceptable to act like a child, but it is completely verboeten to point out that someone is acting like a child.

So yeah, if you post about how you see and talk to faeries or how the KKK is awesome I will not hesitate to flame you. Sorry.

I would be happy if people would just use "is" and "are" properly.
