The Videogame Soundtrack Appreciation Thread

Anyone else here love videogame music?

I collect videogame soundtrack CDs whenever i get the chance.

Megaman 9 is my latest addition and should be in my hands later this week or next week.

I must say, every Grand Theft Auto I have played has a great soundtrack. I think it's because I like 80's music too much.

I don't have any albums of video game music, but I very much appreciate it.

My brother was play Dr. Mario recently. Man I love that soundtrack.

Legend of Zelda theme is the best.

I've been playing Boom Blox on the Wii. Though there's not really a soundtrack, all the sounds are very pleasing. It's like every little sound effect is a tasty morsel.

Apparently, the World of Warcraft, WoW The Burning Crusade and, maybe, WoW Wrath of the Lich King themes are on iTunes for purchase.

Fine. I choose The Sims and Sim City. You real gamers will kill me for this.
EA did a fine job with that music. Must have hired Hans Zimmer or something.

Also a good one.

I don't think there was a Sim City 4 soundtrack album avaliable, but i did copy the MP3 files and put them on my MP3 player so i can listen to them at work.

I did the same thing. I believe EA found out that people were doing this and put some sort of blocker thing on all future games.

I've been playing a really old Game Boy game recently called Nemesis (I'm pretty sure it's a port of the first Gradius), and it has a pretty excellent soundtrack for such an early Game Boy title.

Metroid II (same system) was great, as well. Very sparse and ethereal.

These soundtracks are actually pretty good.

I also like the Final Fantasy soundtracks.

I always did like the theme to Rogue Spear. A game in the Rainbow Six series. That was a long time ago.

I loved the original rainbow six and rogue spear, i've heard the later renditions have been turned into console fodder for kids though

the intro to Unreal just popped in my head looking at this thread. I still have my voodoo2 sitting in a box, that was awesome when this game came out.

I can't believe that one didn't come to mind first for me. I always spent the rest of the day humming that theme -- and in every variation from the game.

I really, really like the Zelda stuff, too, even though it's still MIDI and not fully orchestrated (actually, I might not like it as much if it's played by an orchestra). I found a collection of every music cue from Wind Waker, and there are a lot of compositional gems in there.

Sometimes I think that the music departments of some software houses take the easy route and throw an otherwise anonymous composition in front of an orchestra (whether real or sampled) just to make it sound grandiose and "important". That's why I'm not bothering with Call Of Duty or Medal Of Honor, even though they're in my iTunes library.

Here's a compilation of some of the more famous themes:

I would have mentioned that one, but that'd be like saying, "Hay guys! Anyone heard of Mario?!"

There's an ice cream truck around here that at one point was playing a very 8-bit-synthesis-sounding version of Korobeiniki (aka Music A). So cool.

Heh, nice! I have the Unreal Tournament Deck 16 song etched into my memory...

The Elebits soundtrack is a good kind of quirky in the same way Katamari Damacy was. Another good soundtrack is Shenmue from the Dreamcast (i never got around to buying it unfortunately but a plethora of MP3s did mysteriously find their way onto my computer).

www.gamemusic.com has a bunch of soundtracks avaliable.

I encountered the coolest thing today, which reminded me of this thread.

I stopped at some convenience store in Middle Of Nowhere, Central California, and noticed that the cash register, while unremarkable in appearance, made the sound effect from a Genesis-era Sonic game of Sonic picking up a ring. It was so bizarre, but cool.
