How to keep a 3 month old kitten from tearing up plants?

Repeated from the "Ask UA Anything" thread ---- but I need a little help here ...

How do I keep my little 12 week old kitten from tearing up the roomies/owner's plants (note he has plants all over the house - on tables, floor, hanging - most are half dead - but unfortunately my little guy has been seen three times now playing in the plant and breaking off leaves ---- Little Boy is on borrowed time ).

Roomie can be a bastid and come home angry and exit a couple of cats. It's been done before - and he's threatened my little guy (luckily my Big Boy has gotten over killing plants).

Help?

spray him with a water spray if he's playing with the plants.
same one used for spraying plants is pretty effective.

Put an electrified razor-wire fence around the plants...

20kV will make the kitten never do that again

My cats chew my plants all the time. I've given up.

But you have a kitten...maybe you can train it. Just spray it every time it chews the plants. AND...get one of those kitty grass things that cats can chew on. When kitty comes near decorative plants...blast the crap out of the kitty. When it chews the kitty plant from the pet store, give it some reward...like pet the cat.

hmmm, perhaps there is something here ... one thing though is that the Little Boy is still sacked out on my bed - he comes alive around 9 pm and roves around all night with the other two adult cats - mainly Big Boy (my other older cat) and right around when I leave for work - Big and Little Boy are running around the house, stomping up and down the stairs like mad things. Ok they're funny - but then I come home to my roommate standing there looking at his dam plant. ARGH!

So ... I've been away for the last perhaps 6 weekends and so this weekend is devoted to KITTEN TRAINING 101!

But until then, I'm confining Bad Boy to my bedroom, and allowing him out when I get home from work to when I shut down.

And buying the same plant for my roommate (tis a feat bringing home potted plants in the backpack - maybe I'll toss on the panniers ...) and taking Broken Plant up to my room and a spray bottle and teach the Little Boy.

Either that or lose him out the door if my roommate gets really pissed off - or find a home - and that's hard - or to the shelter. My boys luv each other).

Squirt guns work on both cats and roommates.

I was going to say some quip about the usefulness of a burlap bag, a brick or two, and a pond, but the ladies never appreciate that joke very much.

You only need to spray the kitty once if you use paint thinner

+1, it worked with all four of my cats so it should work for yours

Roommate needs to step back and realise that a house plant is significantly lower on the food chain than a cat. If one of my ex moron roommates tried to oust one of my cats over a stupid (half dead) plant I'd have punched in the nuts. Repeatedly. For an hour. Then get him a plastic plant and tell him to keep the useless thing dusted.

Why can't the plants be trained in self-defense?

<snicker> I've heard of people using vinegar - but then I don't like the smell of that stuff.

Think this weekend will be intense Kitty 101 here. He has been starting to mind to "NO!". Being a rescue kitteh - he smells food (we would see him and toss some food to him to get him to come closer to us) and he's your bestest buddy - crawling slowly towards you and meowing - ---- but he stops immediately when it's "NO!" - and he doesn't keep retrying.

Plants, hmmmm.......

Or a fake kitty.

Or, even better, a fake roomie!

red pepper: sprinkle it on & around the plants, and the kitty will steer clear. Or, mix some chili oil in the water for a mister & spray the plants - same effect but less noticable.

Hog tie the cat each day before you leave. It won't tear up any plants while you are gone, and you can learn new knots each day.

Put him outside or turn him into a stuffed cat, then he will not hurt anything and will be with you forever.
