This Carbon's for Cops

Sorry, gang, no bike stuff, but I've been at the "Cops" Show in San Diego this weekend, and saw some cool toys including new bikes, flashlights, tasers, vests and a new "super" Police Interceptor by Carbon Industries.

0-60 MPH in 6 sec, 0-100 in 14 sec, Diesel and 28-30 MPG

This police vehicle has a totally integrated lighting system that essentially can be seen (I'm guessing) a mile away, but remains fully concealed.

The lightbar built into the roofline, now that's smart.

I've always wondered why there isn't a purpose-built police car. Seems like an awful lot of work to modify Caprices and Crown Victorias (even though GM/Ford did a lot of the work ahead of time), and the results aren't even perfect.

I saw that police car made by an offshoot of Ford execs. It has a lot of cool features.

Bad thing is that they will never be sold to the public, new or used. They are sort of leased (like EV1s), then are returned and crushed.

Compare the cost of a Ruf compared to a Porsche.

More like this car will be returned and recycled, at least as much of it as possible.

I read about this earlier this year. Pretty massive piece of work. It's like a cop's wish list -- all the custom add-ons will be part of the car.

Its computer will be integrated into the dash, so there won't be a laptop-on-a-TV-tray like they have now. Same with the radio and other communications. I'll bet that a holster for a shotgun is integrated into the interior, too. Reinforced compartment for the perps in the rear, with an offset layout -- basically, the prisoner's feet will be ahead of the driver's butt, which gives more leg room for both front and rear occupants.

There are other features, too, but I can't remember them all.

The whole in-dash computer thing will be a standard pretty soon. Not just for cops but for everyone. We all want to play MP3's and have GPS navigation, little dvd screens on the back for the kids, a way to store music and movies while on the road, etc etc etc. The in-car computer will integrate all of the above nicely. And it will be cheap enough to become a standard... a lot cheaper than buying all the gadgets separate.

^^^ That level of in-dash computer exists in pretty big numbers already. I can buy it for my car for around a thousand bucks and install it myself. What they're talking about for the cops is a full-blown terminal and keyboard, like they have now, where they can run someone's plates or license, get info about nearby incidents, etc.

@ the donut machines...

Article in Wired:
http://www.wired.com/cars/futuretran...16-03/pl_motor

The company's home page:
http://www.carbonmotors.com/
http://www.carbonmotors.com/machine/specifications

I was right, it does have an integrated shotgun holster...

Among other things: hoseable rear seats, front seats designed to accommodate officers wearing their gear, and a rear end designed for 75 mph collisions. Goodness..

great. They're making it harder and harder to spot police cars on the road. I have a god awful fear of the police. I hate it when I see a car and think that it's a normal car, then find out 2 seconds later that it's cop car. A lot of the police cars here have very low profile lightbars and it makes it impossible to discern a non-cop car from a cop car at any distance.

Police cars probably always will be big sedans. They have to be heavy enough to ram larger vehicles, fast enough to chase faster vehicles, big enough to transport a bunch of equipment and people that get arrested, and maneuverable enough to do those things well. Plus they need to be affordable, and long term reliable.

Problem is, these things don't calculate out to perfection, and never will. It's just not possible.

yeah, too many conflicting variables. California tried a couple of Camaro CHP cars a couple years ago. I know for a fact that they can't break 150mph... which isn't quite fast enough... suckerzzz...

You're even faster than a Motorola?

I actually like this cop car thing. It doesn't look as full of compromises as the cars we've got now, and has features that aren't practical for mainstream civilian sedans. And, the police cruiser market may be heading this way if Detroit can't keep making big sedans (I'd wager that more Crown Vics get sold to the government than anyone else).

On the "other side of the law", I like 'em, too. Sure, they don't have light bars, but that shape is one of the most distinctive out there. I think I could spot one several blocks away.

Another thought: This seems like a step towards the custom police vehicles that you see in movies set in the future.

Sticking point: the suicide "coach" rear doors. They look like they're tailored for letting cops get their nuts kicked.

Well, a lot of cops are too embarrassed to call in and admit they got their ass handed to them. By the time they make a U-turn and get up to speed, I'm at 180mph+ have over 2-miles on them already.

If my Civic had that kind of power, I'd be far, FAR too tempted to exploit it..

So, I just behave on the roads and have my fun elsewhere.

My old co worker got clocked by the MSP doing about 160 in his Trans AM. An LT1 built for the task will do it.
