Tomorrow's the day - some of you may not know (longish).

I've been having chest/heart issues.
The last race of the season this year I noticed something. And it hasn't been right since. Here's what's been going on:

All year I have been training hard, racing hard. I moved up from cat 5 to cat 3 and won my fourth cat 3 race in Fort Mill. I've had been feeling great all year. So the last race of the season rolls around. I train for a couple of weeks. As the race approached, I started backing off to recover. Then one morning I went out to do some V02s. My heart rate skyrocketed. My power - gone. Hmm. Maybe I need some more time off. A few days later on my race prep ride the same thing happened. My heart rate was really high and I couldn't hardly stand to do anything. At the race I couldn't warm up and as soon as the race started I was off the back and struggling. My HR was so high my back hurt. I couldn't breath, I was in severe pain, and started getting dizzy and couldn't concentrate. I thought maybe I overreached this year.

But ever since, I've been having flutters, palpitations, and some pain in my left side. I have a history of high blood pressure. So the first Dr put my on a mild diuretic. My BP is down but I still have some issues. I can train and ride hard - nothing like a 3 - 4 hour race though. Sometimes I can't sleep because my HR is high or beating funny. I cannot handle caffeine like I use to. Small cup o' coffee is all.

Tomorrow is my cardiologist visit. I hope that if they find something, that it's not serious and I get the go ahead to keep racing. If not, that sux... but God is still in control and I will do what I have to.

Today, I'm having a bad day. Pain and flutters. I shouldn't have got up to train this morning. But I keep thinking I'm OK until 2 hours later. Then I realize I'm not.

Oh boy. Good luck with that and don't do anything until you find out. And try not to let it stress you out. That will only add to it. No use stressing over something you don't know. My best wishes and prayers are with you.

Please keep us updated.

Best of luck...and you aren't alone. I'm taking two meds now due to similar issues. One of these meds could prevent me from getting a USCF license, but we'll see. Anyway, I hope it turns out to be something easily treatable (maybe an electrolyte imbalance?).

It'll be interesting to find out what the heart doc tell you....I'm sure a treadmill is in your future along with a nuke scan.

Good luck and keep us informed.

That's what I'm hoping. But I've had blood work drawn. Nothing came back negative - that I know of.
My wife, who works their, actually told the Dr that I'm not your casual, weekend bike rider. That a diuretic maybe a bad choice to give a competitive cyclist. I told him one day, but he brushed me off. Then when my wife explained that what I actually do, he called me back in for blood work.

I hope it's nothing serious. I know racing is a hobby - nothing more. But I love doing it. It's something I feel I'm good at. And I just started doing it.

With you in spirit today, SS. Thinking peaceful thoughts for a positive prognosis. The fact that you still can ride is a good sign, but def. get a through check to be safe. Maybe you'll just need a meds change....

fwiw, Once I hit 40 I could no longer pound caffeine like I used to to....I used to be a coffee fiend. I just began drinking caffeinated coffee again last year after four years off but I may just stop again. Yesterday I had three cups and felt like crap afterward.

Good luck, hopefully everything will turn out ok.
Are you taking any supplements/vitamins as part of your diet?
I've had bad reactions to some that gave me the symptoms you indicate.

Here's hoping the doc has what it takes to chose the correct tests and properly diagnose you. Nothing's more frustrating than getting a medical professional who doesn't know or care enough to figure it out the first time....

Ever done any alternative therapies and techniques like yoga and breathing exercises?

I do that sort of thing quite a bit. I am convinced that it has a positive effect on cardio-pulmonary health. I would be glad to talk to you about it if you like.

I haven't as of late. If the Dr doesn't find anything, then by all means I need to go another route to relieve the issue. Even so, if they do find something what you are talking about would be great as well.

Thanks

If you have a set of scrubs, or a track suit that has no metal in it, take them with you.
Not having to wear the backless gowns makes a day of being poked and nuked much more pleasant.

Sorry for your troubles, good luck with it.

I'm not a fan of medical scares of any kind, even if they turn out to be nothing... too familiar with that kind of stress
Will be thinking of you... hope everything goes well.

Make sure you let the doc know exactly what you are putting into yourself.

A while back I noticed my heart rate going sky high for no apparent reason. It killed me in races and fast group rides because I would be ready to blow in the first mile. I attributed it to my smoking, but it persisted even after I quit. So I quit taking the vitamins and supplements I had been using and after a week or so I no longer had the problem. I started taking the stuff again, one at a time. Turns out the prostrate supplement I was taking was the culprit. The Saw Palmetto wasn't the problem, but other things they added like l-arginine and yohimbe bark might have been.

It never ceases to amaze me how far from medical reality most lay people are.

In any case, best of luck t you. Given the description of symptoms you have given here and not knowing anything else about you, my best guess is you are getting an EKG right off the bat. Assuming that is normal (I'm sure they did one before putting you on the diuretic), you are likely to be wearing a Holter monitor for a couple of days. It records your heart rate and rhythm. You may be suffering from paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (PSVT), paroxysmal atrial fibrilation (afib), or another cardiac arrythmia. Too many possibilities to guess. Not the end of the world by any means, but it may put an end to your racing days (not your riding days by any means). Or, you could end up with a one track mind cardiologist that schedules you for a cath before hearing the rest of the story. Not the end of the world either.

Best of luck to you. There are solutions though.
