Hmm, funny, you all got anaethesia....when I got one: nothing, just the feeling of a guy shoving a hose up your ass for an incredible length.

Again, with or wihtout, it's no biggie....just relax and you'll fly through it. One thing, for me the taking out was very, very, very unpleasant. It feels like your bowel is collapsing (which may very well be true), but yeah, you might be asleep for that.

Anyway, whatever the case, you need it, it doesn't kill you --> it makes you stronger

The below camera is fine and dandy except that there is no way to snip a polyp or biopsy sample

I've never had a colonoscopy... but I would love to share with you all that my dad's proctologist's name is Dr. Ramsbottom.

For real? Ramsbottom? Why not change your name to Dr. Gentlehands, at least in the medical world?

Dr. Ramsbottom. heh. Oh yeah, we had a few good laughs about that one.

I've had 2 (I had polyps, and colon ca runs in the family), they're no big deal. The day before is not
fun and whatever you do don't fart, trust me on that one.
I'd also suggest you schedule it for as early in the morning as you can, that way you go home, have
some food and sleep the rest of the day and don't have to sit around waiting for the procedure.

You'll probably wake up in the park the next day without any clothes on and a mustache drawn on your behind with a sharpie, but other than that it should be routine.

I'm supposed to have one. I really don't want to do it. Frankly, the notion of putting myself in for what amounts to minor surgery makes my skin crawl. I went through so much pointless, painful crap with doctors between 2000 and 2005 that it's all I can do to drag myself into their friggin office to get blood work done.

But I will get the poop scope done this year. Oh yes.

You could "warm up" for the big day by doing the Nyack ride without a seat.

No, but I have lived with Ulcerative Colitis for over 25 years now so I know the importance of getting the scope. Just go and get it done.

I always thought surgery involved knives and cutting into skin.

No cutting in this one. Totally painless.

And that Dave Barry piece was wonderful. Glad I have a nice corner office with nobody to hear me snicker.

I've had two knee surgeries (one major) and two major back procedures. Whether they are giving you a friggin head transplant or popping a zit, if there is anesthesia involved, it's the same as surgery to me. Recent studies show virtual colonoscopy with similar rates of detecting cancer as traditional procedures, but I figure they'll find polyps and I'll wind up having a roto rooter regardless, so I'll go with the poop shoot snake method right out of the gate.

You know what's getting me to go? Discussing colon cancer treatment with a pal of mine who had it. He's only a couple of years older than me. I loathe going to the doctor for anything, but this may prevent me from getting a more serious illness that would really require much more extensive medical intervention. And of course it could save my life.

Colonoscopy is not so bad. Sigmoidoscopy on the other hand...

Same procedure, they just don't go up as far and use NO sedation. Yup, you're totally awake. They don't even take you out to dinner after.

Either I'm out or it's out. My wife's involved total anesthesia, I'm going to the same doctor. Even if it was twilight a., same difference, she didn't remember a thing. Like I'm going to let them put that thing up my bunghole while I'm awake. Yeah, that's gonna happen.

I've had 5 or 6 of them over the past 20 years. It is exactly like Dave Barry's description. Closest thing to a "horror story" was the one or two times the doctor started the procedure before the anesthesia had completely kicked in, which is more alarming than actually painful.

I look at it as 2 days of inconvenient discomfort, as a way to avoid a lifetime of debilitating pain. I'd happily go for another tomorrow if it would ensure that.
