Anybody keeps Photoalbums anymore?

I have some left, from the pre-digtal era. And I do order some prints every now and then, to hang then on the wall or to send to my non-computarized family. But other than that, I don't. Most of my family photos remain digital and people only see them on a screen. I don't make any new old fashioned photo albums anymore.

I didn't, even before digital photography came into vogue.

Recently, a leaky roof ruined most of the albums of old photos, so the salvageable pictures were removed and put into a box.

I use photobucket for my pics. What is the chance of something like that crashing, and everyone losing thier pics?

I didn't take loads of photos before I went digital. I liked taking pictures, and I think I picked up some of my mom's artistic eye.

But, I didn't like buying film, getting it developed, and finding a place to keep it. Now that I think about it, I also didn't like having to choose between shooting slides or prints. It was all so restrictive -- I had to pick and choose every single shot, and if I wanted to show them off, I had to dig them out of wherever I stored them.

Since getting my first digital camera back in '01, I've shot thousands of pics. Thousands. I've got nearly 10,000 on my computer -- and I know that plenty of people have multitudes beyond what I've got. I can post them online, show them on my iPhone, or do slideshows on TV. I can try ten different shots of the same subject without thinking that I'm probably wasting money on nine of them. I can shoot short video clips without fumbling for the Super8 movie camera that we used to have.

However, one of my sister's favorite birthday presents was a photo book that I laid out in iPhoto and had printed & mailed to her. I don't think that homemade printed photography is ever going to disappear.

Every time we have a family get together we haul at least some of them out and see if anybody can identify more of the people, then we carefully log the description and information. We have one picture that we know who 2 of the 5 adults are, all of the kids and dogs have been identified, but no one can figure out who the other 3 people are. We suspect they may be field hands, that picture dates from around 1930.

Webshots is bailing out, if you find any of my posts with corrupt picture files and want to see them corrected please let me know. :(

My wife and I have 40+ photo albums from when we were kids (somehow my wife and I both ended up with both families' photo albums), plus 100s of loose photos that never made it into an album.

For digital photos, my wife loves ordering photo albums online from various sources. We also print our own photos with the highest quality paper and they have been lasting several years so far and look just as good as ordering elsewhere.

Regarding back-up of digital stuff, I put all of our photos onto a CD that we have with the photo albums, and I put photos on DVDs that I store at my sister's house many miles away. AND, I upload the most important photos to an online photo album. The only concern would be the DVDs degrading over time, so I plan to redo them every 5-10 years or so... which seems so far away.
