Gold plated idiot.

Is it possible for an American olypic icon to go without some form of stupidity? Keep the image clean and all that stuff.

Kellogg to drop Phelps over pot smoking photo

Cereal and snack maker Kellogg Co. says it will not renew its sponsorhip contract with Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps because he has acknowledged smoking marijuana last fall.

The Battle Creek, Mich.-based company said Thursday that Phelps's behavior — caught on camera and published Sunday — is "not consistent with the image of Kellogg."

The company put Phelps on boxes of its Frosted Flakes and Corn Flakes.

Phelps has kept the backing of many sponsors since the photos surfaced that showed him inhaling from a marijuana pipe.

Phelps's agent was not immediately available to comment.

Kellogg says its contract with Phelps expires at the end of the month.

I'm telling you, Kellogs is missing a trick here. Back in the day, nothing satisfied my munchies like a huge bowl of Frosted Flakes. They're great!

Phelps didn't seem to learn his lesson when he got caught for DUI after his first olympics. Perhaps losing all of that endorsement cash will make him smarter.

Haha, indeed. When it comes to DUI, it's bad....but smoking pot? Well, never keep photographic evidence....the only crime is getting caught

Exactly! How naive is he to believe that if he's doing something illegal, that there's always some jerk that will try to capitalize on it? I want marijuana to be decriminalized, but it's never going to happen if stoned idiots don't stop screwing up.

23 years old is certainly old enough to know the difference between right and wrong, and to have enough good judgment to see that engaging in such activities would threaten one's livelihood.

While I don't really care that he was hitting the leaf, I also don't have any sympathy for him because he should have known that there would be consequences.

Before you pass judgment, think about this - Could you live under a microscope, with as much media scrutiny? With out going insane(see Britany Spears), or be seen doing something that others shouldn't see.

Oh stop. He's 23, he did a friggin bong. He's back in training and he apologized. He'll lose a couple of endorsements. I'd say that for a famous kid with a gazillion bucks, he's got his head screwed down pretty damn tight. I'm not worried about Mr. Phelps. Not at all. He will be just fine.

I'm sure he will be ok, I just want to be able to see a top teir sports star stay clean for all the young folks who admire them. The impression he makes on kids is important. Of course I plan to teach my daughter that she should never idolize or place too much weight on te actions of any sports or entertainment star.

Though I'm not going to fault a 20 something for smoking some pot, I will say he was incredibly stupid for doing it within eye shot of anyone with a cell phone camera. It's not like he's going to go pro and sign a multi million dollar deal with some professional swim team. All his earning and future earnings will have to come from endorsements and that is where his image counts for everything.

If he keeps this up no one will want him then he'll end up a High School swim coach making $40,000/year.

He is 23 people. He was at a college party. I wonder how many exec's at Kellogs have done some 420 baking? Jeebus. Unless he is locked in a closet, inside a locked room, inside a locked house, inside a locked and gated community, he is going to be around someone with a camera and a profit motive. Guarantee that photo made some jr. business major at USC a few bucks.

But the real question is, is a hit on a bong worth millions of dollars? That must have been some good Sh*&%t.

Come on if you know your image is worth millions is it really that hard to say no?

The kid is 23. He has been training like a banshee since he was in his early teens. Things that we take for granted, he has never experienced most likely. Although it will cost him some money, perhaps he will learn that all the sycophants are not his friends and that there are a lot of people who will do anything to make a buck, regardless of what it costs other people.

I hope we all hold ourselves to the same high standards that we hold public figures too.

I'd been in the military for six years by that age. He's plenty old enough to have a clue.

Sorry jsharr but I think your missing the point. This is not a moral issue or how much he trained this is a business issue pure and simple. The executives at Kellogg don't give a hoot about Phelps they are concerned with their brand image i.e. bottom line. Now given the fact the they have been in business since like the stone age (no pun intended) I think they know what their are doing.

Phelps can not go on winning gold medals for ever, there is no money to be made in swimming. The only asset he has is his image and reputation. And this is not the first time he's done something like this. Personally I'm not passing judgment if he smokes pot or drinks till he passes out (as long he does not drive since he does not live far from me). I just making the point he making very bad business decisions. You can fault the executives at Kellogg all you want but its their ball, their game and their rules.

Who was that "bad boy" guy in downhill skiing a few years back something Johnson, won a gold medal. I seen something about him on an HBO special a while back he living in a trailer park or something now. He never got the big endorsements he thought he'd get. He just didn't have the image the sponsors wanted.

And yea as a professional I do hold myself, my colleagues and people who I do business with to a high standard, don't you?

It is pot, and it is not a big deal, IMO. If it was a beer bong in his hand, no one would care. He has my support regardless. Let people enjoy themselves and taste life every once in a while.

It's a big deal in that his sponsors are gonna cut him, and he has no one to blame but himself.
