What Should I Save, What Should I Shred?

When I was a kid, my mom scared me into saving documents of all types for 7 years. So, I have a box full of documents of every kind going back to 2001. I am going to go through my files and add last year's documents to it, but my wife made a point that I don't have to keep everything. I actually tend to be the opposite of a pack-rat, so it's impressive that I have these types of things saved in the first place.

First, for you youngsters, I am talking about real life paper documents, not electronic ones!

And by saving everything, I mean everything from every electric bill to every pay stub to every credit card statement I have ever opened for the past 7 years!

I figure I will save credit card and bank statements, but shred water bills and receipts for crap I don't even own anymore. Of course I will keep all past tax information.

What does FOO recommend I save, and what should I shred?

I could Google for ideas but this is much more fun! I call it Foogling = asking questions on FOO instead of Google!

Keep your old love letters, throw away your old bank statements.

I'd keep all purchase receipts, even if it's for a set of condoms from the Kwik-E-Mart, for at least 3-7 years.
