My FL roadtrip report

17 hour drive each way.

SW Florida is flat and windy. You have to learn to like the wind . I would rather ride in a 20mph wind up north than a 10mph wind where there is no place to hide from it. But sunny and 80F is hard to resist this time of year.

My trip was primarily to visit my aging parents, so the bicycling was a bonus when I could get it in. Between driving to appointments and household repairs, I still managed to get 70 miles over 3 days. Because of the economy (I think), there was very little traffic on the road.

Lee county apparently has one of the top foreclosure rates in the US, and there were many houses in various stages of completion, yet seemingly abandoned. In fact, the only construction I saw was at a Habitat house.

Other notes:
Saw one other rider, a kid on his way home from school. He thought it odd that I would wave
There might be a good cup of coffee in Statesville, NC. But I couldn't find it.

Lee is one of the nicer places in Florida to ride.
I dont know if you could get to Mt. Dora or Eustis but if you
come back, hit them up
The wind is brutal. Im on the eastern shore and it will almost stop you
on some days. Really !
There are so many 'untilitarian'(poor ?) riders and club roadies that
no one waves, here. It would be like toyota drivers waving to each other.
-ADVOCACY-☜ Radical VC = Car people on bikes. Just say "NO"

we were in FL (East coast, near Cape Canaveral) for a week+ in Feb. I was amazed at how many more cyclists I saw this year....seemed like there were hardly ever any bikes out in the past 10 years.
