Is there a way to get internet if you're out in the middle of the ocean, or in the middle of a desert? Is there a mobile sat internet?

You can use internet and voice services via satellite in remote locations, but the costs of doing so are prohibitive for most people.

So why do you want the internet then? To distract and annoy you while you are supposed to be enjoying yourself?

No. Mainly to let my family know I'm safe and to post pictures/updates to a blog.

Can you point me in the right direction? When I look up satellite radio I find only dish systems that require a car to mount them.

Yea I would have one of those anyways. Keeping my family updated works both ways. They get to know I'm safe and I get to keep my sanity if I'm in a long stretch where I don't see people for a long time.

BGAN satellite

But if you're just letting people know where you are and if you're okay - go with a satellite phone - smaller and a lot cheaper. (way more than a cellphone, but cheaper than satellite internet)

I'm thinking the pictures from the middle of the ocean are all gonna look pretty much the same. Take one and post it each day.

There's something that the touring crowd is talking about called "the spot" - I think it's a GPS locator. try the touring forum here or crazyguyonabike.com. Not really up on what-all it does since I have zero interest in anyone keeping track of me.

Don't be a slave to technology, just go backpacking.

Yea that was linked to in the posts above. There's nothing wrong with wanting to stay connected to the world, ie family.

Check Atlantic Radio Telephone - http://www.atlanticrt.com/index.cfm

They're not cheap; my plan is about $85/month + usage for emergency service for 2 phones. Plus close to $2K each for the phones.

Ok that's only good for the rich... but honestly satellite tv... c'mon I'd rather have internet over TV... and what would you watch at sea anyways...

That's something different. Ships have the equivalent of a satellite dish that keeps locked onto a signal. That's rather expenive for an individual.

The other option is a satellite phone. They cost roughly $1,000 and the cost per minute is really high- close to $0.80 to $1.50.
