how often do you restart your computer?

i never turn off my two primary computers - the desktop is on right now, 35 miles away, doing its thing while i sit here with my laptop. which leads to something i noticed: i'm running a utility on my laptop that, among other things, tracks uptime. and it has been on for over 20 days without a restart - which seemed odd, as my desktop gets rebooted at least once a week.

i do run a far broader range of software on my desktop, so it updates more frequently (and it's Windows, so updates more frequently), but i didn't think the difference was that much. the laptop pretty much just runs Firefox, Eclipse, Idle and Word. and plays movies. the desktop runs all that, plus tons more... but not the movies.

so, how often do you restart your computers?

AT home, seldom, usually only when necessary. At work, every day.

Well, I do a lot with hardware changes, so, on average, I probably re-boot every day or so.

work computer every couple days, it will give stupid messages like "microsoft office prevented the system from entering standby" and it will hang there, or hang trying to resume. My personal system 3-4 times in the 5 yeras I've owned it when I would swap in a bigger drive.

Everyday, a few of the programs I use (adobe illustrator, and others) always seem to slow it down after working on large files.

I also usually turn my home comp off every night cause no matter how low I set the fans, the slight hum annoys me.

Once a week, whether it needs it or not.

Sounds like you need a memory upgrade Jersey.

At home, every day but only because I turn my computer off at night so i can sleep (it's in my bedroom). Otherwise i'd leave it on to run BONIC at night and while i'm at work.

At work, i almost never restart it unless it's getting really sluggish from running BONIC when i'm not at work. Maybe once every 2 or 3 weeks.

I'm at 18 days at the moment. Before that it was ~60, and over 200 days before that.

No, it just happens. I get HUGE files in Illustrator and it just does something to it.

At my last job, my computer had Windows XP 64 with 8 gigs of memory and it would still bog down. Well not bog down, just not be able to handle the huge files as easily. Same thing with the home and work computer I have now.

If I don't run Illustrator, it'll be fine.

I turn mine off ever night, I got a server that does work overnight, and so this desktop would just suck up electricity for no good reason.

The server typically runs for months before I need to reboot it for whatever reason, of course now that I run hot-swap SATA drives and an IDE usb setup I don't see the need to do that for awhile now...

Nowdays, it's a trivial matter. There's very little that can be "worn out" except for the fans. Even hard drives take a loooooong time to wear out.

Not really, it's part of normal computer operation, sure it pulls more power during boot, but not that much.

To be honest, keeping a power supply on overnight is actually harder on it (in the case of standby), they're rated for hours, not power ons.

Well that is if your computer is pulling power, turning the power supply itself off isn't required, and hibernate and motherboard standby (not computer standby) are both extremely low power consumption so they don't matter.

Last restart on my Vista system was due to Patch Tuesday, so I usually have my systems up for about a month, then restart. Non windows machines usually far longer. My Macbook, usually when there is a security update to OS X that requires a reboot.
