What are you worth?

I was watching an interesting 20/20 (abc.go.com > episodes > 20/20, "What Are You Worth?") on people losing their jobs, and having a hard time identifying themselves being laid off after for 10, 20 years in a previously successful industry.

They covered Denver newscaster Ernie Bjorkman who after many years in the industry and making a 6-figure salary finished a degree as a Vet Tech, now in his late 50's. He will be earning less than 25% of what he was previously making. When asked what he is worth:
"I think what I do now is going to be priceless and nobody can take that away from me, I can do it until I die. I think the profession I'm going into is going to be a very honored profession, and so I think my self worth [is high]"
Thinking about a possible move, potential salary cut, etc. I wonder "What am I worth?" The answer for me is easy: "I'm only worth as much as my own happiness-- which is priceless".

What are you worth?

Apparently a 6 pack of cold PBR. That's what my real father traded me for at the World 600 back in 1980. I was 10, he was hot and thought it was a good trade.

Of course, but don't worry, the alcohol kills the germs. They dug a tunnel out of the prison do their "messy business"....just got to make sure they're back in before the prison guard notices.

Just remember that you're standing on a planet that's evolving
And revolving at nine hundred miles an hour,
That's orbiting at nineteen miles a second, so it's reckoned,
A sun that is the source of all our power.
The sun and you and me and all the stars that we can see
Are moving at a million miles a day
In an outer spiral arm, at forty thousand miles an hour,
Of the galaxy we call the "Milky Way".

I think I'm worth less after they replaced my silver/mercury fillings w/ plastic. Actually, I don't know if the cost of mercury disposal outweighed the value of the silver anyway...

Reminds me of the Seinfeld where Elaine was some kids God Parent. If the kid's mom had a mishap, Elaine was responsible for the child.

Elaine: Oh, just great. I found out that Vivian has some kind of medical problem and if the worst happens she wants me to take care of Jimmy.

Jerry: Oh, I'm sure it won't be the worst.

Elaine: It doesn't matter. If anything happens to her, I'm on deck! Scissors mishap, air show disaster, Chinese organ thieves...it's a dangerous world.

$12 + S&H.

But really, I've been on a simplification kick lately. It happens once in a while, and I think about lightening my physical load drastically. I think it'd be nice to be able to, if necessary, move with one carload, or a small trailer. I don't know what brings it on, but I really don't care for the thought of having way too much unnecessary crap.

I've been trying to simplify too. I realize I'll never be able to fit everything in a truck bed, and I'm ok with that- but I tend to hang onto stuff "just in case" when the fact is, someone might really benefit from whatever "it" is immediately, if I'd just get rid of and donate it.

+1, thats the spirit!
I can't imagine doing something like Bernie did and your quality of life not being ruined by your conscience and/or constant fear of getting in trouble.
