Hulu.

I just watched "Nobody's Fool." Online. For free. With great quality (from afar).

Boom.

I've never watched anything on Hulu.

An interesting question is whether Hulu or YouTube has the better business model going forward?

I've been using Hulu for a while. Except for some connectivity issues, it's all right. To be honest, I'm not sure if the issues are on my end, or on theirs.

But, I've watched every episode of both Stargate series, Firefly, some BSG, the occassional Babylon 5, Buck Rogers, Hell's Kitchen. Working on season 2 of Buffy, as well as some of Dave Ramsey's show.

Maybe my streaming issues is a result of using Firefox w/AdBloc? I wonder if IE would have the same problems.

As far as the YouTube vs. Hulu (did not read the linked material), a lot of the material posted on YouTube is credited to Hulu.

hulu and other streaming tv sites are one of the biggest reasons I don't bother paying for cable. the biggest is probably that I want a cable buffet- pay only for what I use: discovery and history. they wouldn't make much money off me

I started streaming Netflix through the xBox a while before Hulu came out. I know I have to pay for the service (it' included with any unlimited plan) but I can stream movies/TV shows in HD to my TV and watch them when I'm on the road.

Boom.

Exactly. Redbox pretty much takes care of any newer stuff we didn't want to see in the theaters. We maybe rent 2-4 videos per month.

If you're talking about the stuttering and buffering issues, I have those too. My desktop-of-the-month is running a Pentium IV @ ~2.4 GHz with 512 MB of RAM and a nVIDIA Quadro FX500 (or FX5200; won't identify the card right). I watched the movie on my 32" LCD HDTV at 1366x768.

At that resolution, it stuttered to no end. After toning it down to 800x600, it streams almost perfectly. Reduce the color resolution to 16-bit for better streaming.

In regards to the first question, I think both of them have solid business models. It seems that YouTube will continue to be the outlet for user-generated content, while Hulu will be the channel for older television shows and movies (pun intended). Hulu is (or was) funded mostly by NBC, so I would think it has solid operating capital. Money will still be made on new releases through conventional methods, and TV will still have its place (until bandwidth becomes large enough to stream most sports broadcasts with no perceived loss in quality).

This was kind of bound to happen. I'm becoming more confident that a market for free, non-DRM music will be established very soon.

its probably been a full year since I've rented a movie. I do miss some of the cable channels that play a lot of movies sometimes, but living single and getting slapped with a $100/month internet + tv bill is insane, especially considering I actually watch about 2 hours/week on average.

paying for internet is another story... I find it a necessity, but have been lucky enough to not pay for it for about a year, either

edit: and thanks, Crassic!

Netflix....I have mixed feelings about. I work for a direct competitor of theirs, so any business they do means less work for me. Not good. However, my hat is off to them. They didn't piss all over themselves when Wal-Mart entered that market. They held firm and ol' Wally finally gave up. Is Good.

Redbox...Again, mixed feelings, as they are also a competitor of the company I work for. But..for a $1 per day per movie compared to what? 5 bux minimum? I can see the appeal. (The pricing plans/rental rates are changing come Memorial Day weekend, but to what, I don't know).

Back on topic- I have not had cable in quite some time, yrs in fact. Years, in fact. Hulu, and others, are free, which is what I'm willing to pay for.

Yes, but YouTube hasn't been making any money. They may or may not be in the process of changing that, but the current model isn't working.

Hulu: Firefly + Arrested Development = love at first sight

Has anyone seen Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip? That was an entertaining show.

But I agree. It's how I watched everything from Arrested Development to Firefly.
