+9 or +10 I lost count. Either way this is the way to go in my opinion.

Do not contribute. If she is retiring, send her a scathing critique!

I would not contribute, but attend the party.

Be professional, smile, and be courtious. Not because its the right thing to do, but you never know who you'll be working for/with in the future, and along with that, you don't want to look bad in front of coworkers who you could meet down the road.

Screw that! This is a recession and the OP has to work two jobs. Why give hard-earned cash to an old beotch?

Heh, you reminded me of the Urban Dictionary definition of "bad economy":

An all-purpose excuse that people use during a recession to justify doing things that are below their usual standard. Often these things in reality have little or nothing to do with the economic circumstances.

Harry: "You took your girlfriend to Applebee's on Valentine's Day? Pretty weak."
Larry: "Whatever man, I didn't have a choice. Bad economy."

Senator: "Mr. Paulson, you really want to give the greedy, soulless bankers who caused this mess $700 billion with no strings attached?"
Henry Paulson: "Hey guys, bad economy. Just do it."
Senator: "Good point. I vote yes."

Fred: "Dude, tell me you didn't go home with that broke down 300-pound whale I saw you with at O'Shea's last night."
Brendan: "Dude, it's a bad economy. I'll take what I can get."
Fred: "Yeah, I guess you have to."

{heavy sigh} I know that Chip is right. I knew that was the right answer before I posted. Just needed a swift kick in the pants to keep on the right path, cuz I really just want to tell her to kiss my a**. I'll contribute the minimal suggested $5 donation to her gift fund and consider going to the party.

While I considered the suggestion briefly, I decided that I don't want to ruin my reputation. So, I did not take your suggestion seriously. It did, however, give me a good laugh cuz I would love to do something such as that.

F that!
Don't contribute, but show up at the party and give her an ass hand.
That's when you put you hand down the back of your pants, get it all smelly with sweaty butt smell, then shake her hand, then leave. She'll be wondering why her hand smells like ass the whole night.

Your hand will smell like ass too, but it's a small price to pay to smite one's enemies.

Ya know, there are probably going to be so many people at the party that no one will know or remember if you were there or not. If it were me, I would do neither.

If it were me, I wouldn't go because I have a 'previously planned engagement' (which could simply be to browse Bike Forums). The co workers will not see it as you standing the party up. I would sign the card nicely, saying that working for her was a learning experience (yah...learned NOT to be like her) and thank her for what she has contributed to the school. I would not donate because it's not from my heart.

That way you leave it neutral and you are not burning any bridges. And you are not going against your feelings. You have to be true to yourself.

I recommend telling her to pound salt up her ass, but then again it's not my career. Still, I give folks what they deserve. Maybe the message to the other people is hey maybe if I treat people badly my retirement party will suck.

Naw man. Don't contribute anything. On top of that, you have something better to do than go to her crummy retirement party. If that bridge didn't serve a purpose, burn it down baby!

+whatever.

After she's gone, there are going to be other people who attended or were a part of organizing the affair who may remember your actions. It will not bode well for your teaching future if you are seen going to war with other's in your profession. You do not need to kiss butt in your profession, but you should usually avoid kicking it.

As one who's worked at my company for about as long as you've been alive, go to the party. Making contacts with all the other folks who go to the party is important. If anyone asks how you feel about the retiring principal, just give them your sweetest smile and say that you wish her a long and healthy retirement.

Once at the party you can also spike the punch with monkey poo...just don't get caught (and make sure the old bag's name isn't Carrie).

Hmmm...Chip has the most sensible and mature advice...and yet I'm somewhat disappointed in him.

Just not what I expected. We can get sensible and mature advicve anywhere.
