How many motorcycles have you owned?

I was making a mental list the other day. I have owned these bikes in order of purchase:

1970's Suzuki 125 cc two stroke enduro
1979 Honda Passport
1970's Honda 350
1980's Kawasaki Police 1000

All of these were bought from the late 70's to the mid 80's and I rode them up until the early 90's when I sold them all and got out of motorcycling.

2004 Aprilia Scarabeo 500 maxi-scooter
2008 Suzuki DR650

I bought these two over the past year when I decided to get back into motorcycling. I still have them. So I have owned six bikes over almost 20 years of motorcycle riding. By contrast, I have owned about 10 bicycles over 35 years of bicycle riding, and still have five of them.

The only motorcycle I ever bought new was the Honda Passport. All the rest were used bikes. I bet there are people here who make me look like a piker in terms of the numbers of motorcycles owned. Show me up for the motorcycle Fred that I am!

Aiee I really want a scooter. I want a 250 or 300cc one so I can ride on highways when I need to. But people told me that it's better to start out on a 150cc or below one so that I can get used to it more. o.o;

I'm looking at the Genuine Buddy 125cc one if I start small or something like a Honda Reflex (but they don't sell those new anymore :3) if I want to go higher. Maybe the Vespa GTS 300? I don't know. I can't afford one right now anyway, but maybe next year. xD;

A 900's not exactly a beginners bike.

And I've never owned my own bike....just ridden other people's bikes.

Suzuki TS185
Suzuki TS250
Some little Kawi 100 that didn't last long (shattered piston)
Suzuki RM125 - sick little bike
Honda CR250 - absolutely insane

I miss those MX bikes. That was a fun, stupid, time of my life. Had to get rid of them to help pay for college. I hope I have a kid that gets into those so I have an excuse to get one of my own again Even though I grew up on those two-strokes, I love the new 4-strokes. My brother's RMZ-250 is just a blast to ride (when I get the rare chance to do so).

There is not a significant size or weight difference between a 150 cc scooter and a 250-300 cc scooter. You can learn just as easily on a 250-300 cc scooter as you can on a 125-150 cc scooter. Depending on your weight and location, you will probably need a minimum of a 250 cc scooter to take it safely on the freeway.

Were I in your shoes, I would be looking at the bigger scooter from the beginning. This will give you the capability of freeway travel, and you wouldn't be selling the smaller scooter in less than a year so you could get a freeway-capable model.

Kymco sells a number of very well-regarded models around the 250 cc size. Theoretically, Honda may start selling the SH 300 in the USA/Canada next year. It is currently one of the most popular scooters in Europe. The Big Three: Honda, Suzuki, and Yamaha have very few scooters in their current lineup other than 50 cc, 125 cc, and then the maxi-scooter of 400 cc on up. Aprilia, from Italy, has a very wide range of scooters in all sizes, and my Aprilia Scarabeo 500 has been a joy.

Whatever you buy, please take the MSF course offered in your area. In some places, MSF provides a scooter class. Also wear the recommended safety gear. Don't be someone who rides in just a helmet with shorts, t-shirt and flip-flops. Some people think scooters are safer and they don't need the gear since they don't go as fast as a powerful street bike. But they can go fast enough to kill you, and your ride size doesn't matter when the pickup truck runs a stop sign and t-bones you in the intersection.

I bought my first motorcycle in 1977, and took a break from '85 to '91 to concentrate on bike racing.
Then I got into road racing RZ350s, then into trials (Yamahas, Betas, Montesas, Scorpa) and off road riding.
Now I am back to mostly cycling.

Bridgestone 100 ✭✭✩✩✩ - What can ya say...1968 uber Japanese commuter throwaway

Harley Sportster ✭✩✩✩✩ - Stopped worse than it went. Unacceptable in almost every category.
Harley Softtail ✭✭✭✭✭ - Like Elvis, THe King !!! doesnt get any kooler than this !
Honda CR250 Elsinore ✭✭✩✩✩ - Set up for ShortTrack racing. Flaming death machine
Honda RR900 ✭✭✭✭✩ - Fast, Nice, typical Honda...Built perfectly. I regret trading this one.
Kawasaki Ninja, ZX-9 ✭✭✭✩✩ - Stoinking motor, crappy handling, carbs iced anything below 40.
Stella Scooter ✭✭✭✭✭ - More fun than a Miley Cyrus concert !
Suzuki DR650 ✭✭✭✭✭ - The best kept secret in bikes. Smoke Squids and KTM kiddies
Suzuki GS500 ✭✭✭✩✩ - Nice UJM, generic olde skool. Not a Triumph, but I can pretend
