Adopted pets

With so many animals in desperate need of loving homes, it almost seems selfish to go to a breeder.

I adopted Inge back in 2003. She's been an awesome dog and I love her dearly. If I ever get another dog again, I'm adopting again.

Two of our cats adopted us. We trapped, spayed and gave away their kittens 4 or 5 years ago and now we can't get rid of them. They sleep on our porch and meow at breakfast and dinner times. One hasn't let me touch her yet.

Maggie was adopted when her owner could not keep her because of personal reasons... I still get e-mails from her old owner asking for updates as she was loved as much by her old family as she is by her new family.

Chester was adopted when his owner, a past apartment manager, committed suicide and left two cats behind. A neighbor was watching them while our manager said he was "out of town". The cats were pretty much alone in a studio apartment for a couple of weeks with a neighbor simply feeding them. When the coroners office came they had the authorities confiscate the cats. I BEGGED them to let me hold on to Chester but they said that the cat could not be handed over until the next of kin released him. So, I immediately drove over to the pound and put a request for him if he wasn't adopted. Luckily the manager's sister released Chester to me early.

He's really an amazing guy. Great disposition, friendly with all, even at the vet yesterday he was happy to come out and sit in my lap while surrounded by dogs and craziness

I strongly believe you need to be very careful to ensure you get exactly the right animal for you.

That's why the dog I have now was the very first one I saw when I entered county animal control.

The last dog I got before her was obtained using the same highly selective process. I'll never forget that day. I walked down the hall at the pound, and she was just waiting for me

People tell me I need to spend more time before making such a major decision, but why search further when you've found exactly what you were looking for?

I too follow this rigorous selection process.

When I went into the humane society, my girlfriend and I saw her and got her out of the cage and she immediately rolled onto her back and wanted us to pet her belly. That is still her favorite thing.

Here's our wonderful adopted kitty Ariel. When we first went to look at kittens she walked right over to me in the room at the humane society, looked up at me and meowed, and that was that She just turned 9, and hope we have at least 9 more years with her. Once she passes, we're going right back to the humane society and doing it all over again.

That's a gorgeous cat, wow.

Here's my naughty boy, Juneau. I adopted him in 2002 with my BF at the time, we actually met Juneau a few days earlier at the SPCA, took him into the fenced play area and...he completely ignored us. So we put him back in his cage with the dog he was caged with. I saw a photo of Juneau (his name was Bruno back then) on the SPCA that was too adorable to resist so we went back, he still kinda ignored us but I begged then-BF to adopt him, so we did. He had an ear infection, weighed only 43 lbs (severly underweight) and was only 1.5 years old and had been dumped there twice, his second stint in dog prison was 6 months!

I have never understood how anyone could dump such a beautiful, sensitive, fun, completely non-aggressive dog.

Incidentally, the cancer stick pack/beer cans belonged to the roommates I had a few months ago, they were major slobs, didn't want to move the items and have Juneau move from that position.

Juneau is 10 now but has the same energy he did as a young dog. He can be a naughty dog, he'll take off if he sees a cat/dog/squirrel/bird. Goofy mutt. He's a German Shepherd Dog / Siberian Husky.

1 of my cats was adopted. My dog basically was adopted on his way to the pound for being a bad boy at the farms. My other cat I rescued, she was a local stray.

Pics here.

When I bought my house in 2006, the first thing I did was look up dogs on the humane society website. They had a link to a kennel that was looking for homes for a few hurricane Katrina dogs. I saw a few that I thought were cute, and originally overlooked the following pic (this is the one they took), thinking he looked weird. When I got there, this guy tugged at my heart strings--he was scared of everything. I adopted him pretty much immediately, and I just love him. He was afraid of everything, but most importantly, STAIRS were particularly worrisome--he'd go down, but not up (and got himself "caught" in the basement a few times). I'm assuming something happened to him during the hurricane, but I'll never know. Anyway, he's mostly past that fear, and is a pretty outgoing dog now.

My pup, before I got him:

Bawww what a cutie. There's something in his eyes, almost sadness. Poor guy. I gave a small amount of $ to IFAW and another org that was trying to rescue stranded pets there. It about killed me viewing the videos of them going around in boats trying to save the poor dogs etc. Sniff.

My Big Boy is an adopted feral. He's skittish, and really only knows me.

My kitten, Ming is mah babe - who came from an outside feral that I had been feeding and not really paying attention to what sex he/she was and when I discovered - ooopsie - pregnant, took her in and put her in a cage in my bedroom for 6 weeks - had kittens inside and adopted them out to great homes - all except Ming - she's mine - felt her right after she was born.

Mother of the clan is now in a decent home - and neutered, barn cat kinda thing but where she is being fed daily - I'm sure she is fine.

Juneau told me he is upset at being ignored on this thread so he forced me to post another photo of him:

He practically matched the carpeting at the place I just moved out of.

Juneau is happy you think so. The look on your cat's face says "Get that ****ing camera out of my face, can't you see I'm trying to chill here?!"
