I came close to violence today for first time since childhood

Some woman picked Cicero* up out of my yard today and drove off with him. I watched her pull off (I was mowing the grass and I did not notice her until she started to pull off).
I called the cops and they brought them both back to my house. Living around the corner from both the Sheriff's office and a State Patrol office has an advantage.
She started having a fit about how Cicero did not have a collar and how that shows how I was not caring for him.
She said since he was by the road she was worried about him and was taking him to the vet.

Both the cops and I believe she is a nut burger, but damn she pissed me off.
I told the cops I didn't care what they did with her, but I found her to be more irritating than poison ivy.
They said that they did not want to have to deal with processing her and took her back to her car with a warning to never even come down my road again.

*Cicero

actually, that's ridiculous. Call them back and press charges. Most communities have some type of provision for this to offset the increasing problem of people stealing pets to sell.

HOLY CARP - What a rude thing for her to do - and so thankfully you saw her as was mentioned above!!!!!!!!!

I've seen many doggies/puppies unattended in the city - but I can quite tell when one is in his/her lawn/house area - and just not wandering - (still no leash or underground collar thingee - had to mention - sorry) - but you knew.

So for her to come down the street and decide - hai - here's puppy and now MINE, amazing.

Glad you got your dog back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I personally would sob if I lost my kitten - she makes my little life - as welll as my big boy cat - and I make dame sure that my front door is locked and my kitties are secure before I open my back door to bring in bikes - which is every day. And I have a sign up for my landlord's plumber, etc who are coming in that they need be aware of kitten/cat - no doors or basement door open at all - in fact call me - I'll come home (because of so much of my kitten demands, etc - if they ever, EVER got out - I would not find them). Never let that happen.

So till then - I will guard.

Sorry, it's on the top of my mind - didn't mean to hyjack ...

From what I gathered one of the officers has dealt with her in the past. She may be off of her meds (or never on them in the first place), her intent was not that sort of criminal. She was unpleasant and very judgmental though.

Please tell me they at least took down her name and plate number. I can't believe they were too lazy to process her. It sounds like it was clearly a case of theft.

From one pet owner to another, I can understand why you'd be close to violence. Glad you got Cicero back.

What the woman did is called theft she needs to be processed. At the very least,
for the purpose of starting a record on her that can be seen by prosecutors if she does
it again.

You were there so your judgment is best.

It's a huge problem though and if there's any chance it was more than stealing him charges need to be placed.

Big problem Nationwide

One more pic of the lucky fellow?

Had I actually encountered her before she pulled off some sort of charge would have been filed this evening. It may not have been for theft.

Wow! I'm so glad my Vic hates strangers! He'll be your pal after he gets to know you, but he will most def tear a hole in your soul if he doesn't. because of people like that I like it that way! This is Vic.
Look a little like your Cicero!

These two are when he was sleeping, first ones an extreme close up!

I love 'em to death and don't know how I would react should someone try to make off with him!
Glad Ciceros safe and sound. ;0)

There were small animals missing in our neighborhood due to being used as pit bull training bait. My cat included.

Cicero is VERY lucky indeed.

When on patrol I remember that we came across this 5150 that always felt the need to lecture people on the street. She was very loud, rambunctious and pretty much spit as she yelled at you. She would flail her arms about, giving the impress she was going to hit someone, giving quite a scare to her victims.

The officer I was training with said that she's a 'regular', and that taking her in, booking her and then letting her go (can't hold someone more than 48 hours in a jail) and then waiting for her to show for court is a waste of their time and the taxpayer money because she would only come out to do it again. She basically was just a loon and did no real harm physically.

Since they were able to get Cicero back, maybe they are thinking the same thing - that she would not show for court, go behind bars and for what? To come out again and still be off a bit.

I had a similar incident not too long ago, except it was within family and his "consequential actions" to address the problem were completely devoid of logic. (In short, I practically had my stuff stolen.) It almost ended with fists to the face. At least your neighbor's claim makes some modicum of sense (though I agree that her actions were completely unjustified).

Sorry that happened to you, bud.

Ugh, makes me hate people sometimes.

Mother-in-law had something like that happen - not with a pet though.

She does stained glass, and had a bowling ball with a mosaic on it in the garden. Someone took it.
Similar to this Mosaic Witch Ball on deviantart

Glad you got him back.

If he's outdoors and not in a fenced area, it might be good to get him a collar and tag for at least those occasions. Our girls never are let out of the house/back yard, or off the leash, but if someone tried to dognap them, I'd be beside myself.

I'm just curious.... what are the licensing and leash laws in your community? Were you following them? In my city you could have been cited for at least two things- not having the license on the dog and not having the dog on a leash.
