Most underrated performance by an actor

Either they were out of favor with those doing the voting or they were overshadowed by another actor in the same film. Perhaps they had never been given credit for having much "talent" to begin with. One that I keep thinking of is an actor in one of my favorite movies of all time. I'm talking about Matthew Broderick's performance in Glory. I've seen it many times and I think he did a marvelous job portraying William Gould Shaw, the young Massachussets Colonel commanding the 54th Regiment of black soldiers in the Civil War. It's hard to get much credit when you're playing opposite Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman in the same movie, but I thought he was perfect for the role of the young colonel. How bout you? Wanna give credit to an actor or actress you felt was overlooked?

I think a lot of films back in the 1960s and 70s had an ensemble mindset, with the story/plot at its center; not so much the film built around one big star with a host of familiar character actors and the story almost superfluous, which is the way it seemed in a lot of older films, and certainly seems to be what we've come back to again today (with special effects taking a lot of the glory away from human actors as well).

In such ensemble cases I would say no one is truly being overlooked, they're merely doing their bits and contributing towards the whole. That said, there are always standouts in a cast. One person that springs to mind is LeVar Burton in STNG (sorry, I know, a TV show, not a movie). In a cast with some awesome acting (Patrick Stewart) and not so awesome acting (no comment) he strikes me as a genius in the Spencer Tracy mold - a very natural and incidental presence on a show which, like most sci-fi, can often go way over the top. Geordie didn't get the girl or the glory very often but he was always a solid backbone of that show imo...

jean claude van damme, steven seagal and jackie chan.

i don't think they ever get the critical acclaim for their moving performances. i have low standards.

Gary Oldman in The Professional.
While a young Natalie Portman (12?) and Jean Reno won acclaim
Gary Oldman was sheer drug induced genius.
Actually I think Oldman is one very underated actor, watch him as Dracula he is absolutely
creepy.

Parker Posey, choose a film. She never gets the props she deserves.

I have to agree with you on that one. He was showing his true form there. LRH would have been proud.

That film was overrated, but she did fine. I liked Party Girl better.

Gary Oldman has always been underrated. The guy was genius if not maybe a little over the top in the Professional but absolutely brilliant in Sid and Nancy and even his cheeky performances in Fifth Element and Batman are good.

I liked Party Girl too - great librarian's film.

I am gonna swim against the tide here; I think Gary Oldman has been shoved into very typecast psycho character roles in Hollywood. I do like some of his earlier stuff but I think he was so talented he really could have done so much more with his career.

A great example of an ensemble cast I mentioned earlier: All the President's Men.
