Home or Professional version. I just placed an order and they're looking up my Student ID
It's an upgrade version though.

Maybe remove the "attention students" and add a bunch of question marks to the end?

My copy of Windows 7 Pro was free through the IT department at my school!!!

Check with MSDNAA and see what your school has to offer if you are a student.

How is Win7? Based on how badly Vista flopped, I'm going to stay the hell away from this one as long as possible. MS has said they will support XP through 2014 if I remember correctly.

Vista's flop wasn't because Vista is a crappy os. It's becuase Microsoft did some big changes to the kernel, but 3rd party manufactures released half-assed drivers. So when people's peripheals didn't work because of the half-assed drivers, they blamed the os. Vista is a decent os. There are problems with the os, but it is a pretty decent os.

Windows 7 is going to be the next XP. It is a fantastic os. It has the features of Vista with the stability and lightness of Xp. Windows 7 can run on a p3 with 256megs of ram.

That sounds like a good thing. I'll give it some time though before upgrading. Or rebuilding, which would probably be a better idea.

I think I can get Windows 7 for free through my school. Too bad I don't have a functioning computer to install it on.

Sounds good, but....

1. Are the 3rd parties going to be on-board from Day 1 to prevent what happened to Vista? Or did MS simply make a last minute tweak without telling anyone?

2. MS is big on legacy. Every new OS has been backward compatible with previous ones, right? But Win7 might break that tradition. Vista requires a minimum of 1GB of RAM to function while the new Win7 won't need nowhere that amount.

Note that I'm not in IT or CS and that the last CS class I took was back in 1996.

From what I've heard from others who have been using the Windows 7 RC for a few months, 7 is very good; the usual recommendation is to skip Vista entirely and ditch XP for 7 when it comes out. I have the RC myself but haven't gotten around to moving my windows stuff over from XP yet, so I've barely used it myself.

So far I'm liking 7 (I say this as I am working on the XP side of my Win7/XP dual boot box, but that is only because the machine is set to auto-boot into XP if I leave it alone). Far and above an improvement over Vista (Windows ME is about the only OS I'd consider Vista superior to however). It will be the next Windows XP, it may take a little time to get most people off XP, but 7 will be the next OS we don't want to get away from.

I have vista set up very nicely. Can't see a reason to "upgrade".

From what I've read, if you're "upgrading" from XP to Win7, there's no in-place upgrading... you have to backup, reformat, install Win7, reinstall your apps, and restore your data.

Given the number of drivers already out for 7, I'd say the 3rd parties are very much onboard for giving driver support.

$30 is kinda high for a service pack

Win 7's solid. I've been running RTM since August. Has yet to crash on 3 computers and haven't needed third party drivers for any. Everything was detected properly at install.

Irrelevant, considering I was talking about XP. Good job missing the point, though.

I preordered. We'll see how this works out. I run XP right now, and I ordered Win 7 Professional.
