Non-cell/satellite alternatives to mp3/ipods?

As a followup to Shadiyah's request for cheap MP3's thread...

Do you have experience with portable players similar to Slacker?..not spamming here. I use that name because I do not know of another product like it. I was tempted but their players have gone through some refining. And they're still physically larger than I'd prefer. However, the idea of paying a much cheaper price for great portable variety with no commercials or reception concerns appealed to me. And it'd be cheaper than buying hundreds of songs online. Not to mention the time needed to do so.

That said, know any other similar players?
