Should I buy windows 7?

I currently run Win XP pro 64bit on my desktop. This is a good machine which I use for gaming and media purposes. Anyways, I've had this copy of XP for several years, having kept the same machine and upgraded it piece by piece appropriately. Under normal circumstances I would be opposed to upgrading my operating system, given how expensive it is to do so. However, Microsoft is offering Windows 7 for $29.99 to students, and I qualify.

I would never consider upgrading when the cost is 200 dollars, but I'm at least willing to consider, given that I can acquire it for 30. Is 7 worth the upgrade? Will I notice some major improvement over XP pro, which has served me well for all this time?

Well darn. It looks like the $30 deal expired. I can get Ultimate edition for 65 though.

I would only upgrade the OS when you upgrade the computer. XP runs much quicker on older hardware than Vista. 7 runs a bit leaner than Vista, but XP still wins out.

If you get an offer "too good to refuse" maybe do a dual boot so you can check it out? There will likely be newer software that requires 7, and it might be nice for that.

I never buy computers though -- I upgrade parts as needed. As such, I'll never upgrade the computer as a whole.

Then get it when you upgrade to a faster cpu/mobo, check the
hardware review sites.

Hundred bucks has become competive. ATI has a nice video card at around 100, AMD has a good cpu.
I'd have to check the sites for the specifics, but you don't have to spend a ton to get a machine with
enough power to run the new games (and your homework)

I just did the upgrade from XP 32 bit to XP 64 bit to Win 7 64 bit and couldn't be happier.

Mostly it's due to cleaning out the crap on my old XP install, but I got the Win 7 upgrade for free and am looking forward to getting all the use out of it. Leave the stone age, upgrade.

I bought the upgrade with the student deal they were running, otherwise I wouldn't have bothered. With that being said, I run Ubuntu and OSX and prefer both of them to Windows 7. Better than Vista, well it really is what Vista should have been in the first place. I still have to monkey around with things to get software to work right, mostly due to Aero it seems. I only use it for the couple of programs that I absolutely can't run under Linux, and that list keeps getting shorter and shorter.

The motherboard took a dump on my hp laptop with Vista. I went ahead and bought a quad core dell desktop with 7 and OMG, it's so much better. I'm one of the many Vista haters you've heard about. I prefered XP by a thousand x. So far I'm lovin' 7 by a long shot over either one, though. As far as how it will run on your older hardware, I can't say.

My XP machine puked out a windows update, so I bought a Vista machine for $500 - HP Slimline with a free 7 update. Well, I updated it, - HATED Vista, - 7 actually works great! Bought the kid a HP laptop for x-mas (7 installed on it), and he's very happy with it. It does seem to load stuff in strange places, but the only "old" thing I can't get to work (didn't work with Vista, either) is my Evoluent Vertical Mouse 3. It works, but the single/double click aspect doesn't work.

A friend TRIED to load 7 onto an XP machine. It was not pretty, and I still don't think it works.

I have 6 machines running XP. One thing to consider is the amount of software you have that will only run on XP, like XP office. I think you'll find you'll be replacing a lot of your software. And, the only people I've seen opting for Office 07 are education and big corp. because they we incentified/forced to move off XP, the clear preference in my world seems to be keeping XP centric machines and software.

I say new machine?, fine, 7 it is. Otherwise, no.

Buy the upgrade and store it for future use. That way, if/when you upgrade your processor/motherboard combo, you'll have 7 waiting, and won't have to worry about paying whatever it might cost in the future.

I would mildly resist the upgrade for a couple of reasons.

The "upgrade" from XP to Windows 7 is not really an upgrade, it is a fresh install, and all the programs will have to be reloaded. Of course, I did it anyway on my Netbook, and have a clean install that runs well.

Drivers for some of your cards may be an issue, but since you seem to upgrade piece meal, it might be a reason to upgrade your oldest cards. This is why I don't upgrade my desk top... I use it for video monitoring, and my card doesn't support Windows 7. It barely supports Vista.

I don't know that, so you can probably skip the 'we all' part. And until people get to try it out for themselves 'know' might be an exaggeration too. And if you do happen to know that, how do you know that? Just asking yourself a question like that once in awhile can help clear up a lot of sloppy thinking. At least that's my experience. It takes a bit of effort to keep assumptions separated from what I know.

For the upgrade part, I haven't used 7 yet but expect that it would have some significant improvements over xp. Vista certainly does have improvements over xp. I've had a couple of screwy problems with it that took a few hours to clear up, but compared to my Mac it is a breath of fresh air. Not sure if I had a lemon or what but I do not want another one.

I'm not actually going to get excited about a new OS at all. If I have the option to get it cheap, then probably. Mostly I use it for html, css, php, xml, etc and they all handle code pretty well. (Now I know why they started school with abcd. I'm working with more of the alphabet every day.) A Linux would probably be able to handle most of what I do with a computer. (but I don't know that)

best wishes,
lloyd

I'd buy Windows 7 at $30 just to future proof yourself. You'll never be able to buy it that cheaply again and it should be good for another 5 years on top of XP.

I like Windows 7 so much that I've actually reformatted my computer that has been reliably running XP for the past 5+ years. I've noticed no performance hit ever since I switched but the navigation is much improved.

OTOH, I wish Creative would get up off their asses and do something about Windows 7 sound card drivers, but that's another story.

So it looks like my 8600GT video card will work with Windows 7, but my CMI8788 sound card may have problems. Processor is an Athlon 64 X2 4800+.

I've decided to keep XP pro. Basically, the system I have works really well right now: pretty fast, error free, and capable of playing relatively modern games smoothly. It sounds like I would gain more benefit from something like an extra gig or two of ram than an OS upgrade. Also there's the fact that I've already got everything installed on this machine, software and the like. It's simply inconvenient to need to replace all that and risk compatibility problems.
