The ace up Apple's sleeve, then, is their retail stores. Nobody believes promotional videos and stage demos, and rightly so. But, when people can try these things out for themselves and see that the interface really is that slick, a whole lot of them won't be able to restrain themselves.

I was telling a friend this weekend that the crowds around Apple stores' iPad tables will be like the crowds in video game arcades when Pac-Man hit the scene.
Basically.

But we'll find out soon enough.

It needs a camera on the face so you can use Skype and then it would be perfect.

Same goes with the iPhone (it also needs a flash on the back that you can use as a proper flashlight and then it would be perfect).

I'll bet it's the same exact crowd.

More reading to occupy our time --

http://db.tidbits.com/article/10983
At Apple's media event introducing the iPad (see Hands-on Impressions of the iPad, 29 January 2010), Glenn Fleishman and I wanted to know what the experience of creating a Keynote presentation would be like.
http://www.techcrunch.com/2010/02/04...8TechCrunch%29
Speirs has made a Flickr set in which he dissects screenshots of the iPad from the promotional shots and videos Apple has released. On each photo he adds his own notes of things to take notice of. But rather than go for most of the obvious elements, Speirs focuses on a lot of UI elements that the majority of people will overlook while watching the videos. This is important because as any good fanboy will tell you, it’s often the subtle things Apple does in its UI work that make its devices stand apart.
And more commentary from Speirs:
http://speirs.org/blog/2010/2/4/ipad...-creation.html
I keep hearing this thing on the web that the iPad is "a consumption device, not a creation device". I don't know why people keep saying that. It's fast enough, it has enough storage and it has some seriously powerful applications. If that's your opinion, please enlighten me in the comments.

I spent this morning going through the Apple iPad videos - the keynote and the promotional video - trying to pick up some cues about how the UI conventions are supposed to work.

• By 2012 or so (barring the End of Days of course) every college student in America will have an iPad, a Son of Kindle, or some other color tablet. They won't carry 40 lb. backpacks full of textbooks, they'll have a slim electronic tablet (thinner and lighter that a notebook computer or netbook) and electronic versions of text books.

Why will these devices sell? Because most of us read newspapers, books, magazines, surf the web, do email, etc. Smart phone screens are too small for many of us to want to use them for those functions. A tablet is perfect. I want one. And I think so will many of us after we see the guy next to us on the commuter train. It beats the hell out of the print edition of the Wall Street Journal, and it's a lot more portable than a 5 lb notebook CPU or 3 lb netbook.

Also, the first salvo from Apple is $500-$700 or so. That's really not too pricey, and with competition and volume I'm sure that price will be 20-50% lower within a couple of years. When these gizmos are $250 or less, most middle class households will have a couple. They really are very useful. Watch the Apple video demonstrating the product and software in use. We'll see if it's that slick in person, but I will be surprised if it is not.
Bold statement, given that post-secondary institutions will not easily give up their bookstore racket... unless they can figure out a way to pad their pockets.

I don't even have an iPod. In fact, I own almost no small electronics besides a basic cell phone.

I'll get one of these when they give you one for free with a phone contract (assuming there is a phone in there someday) and the data plan doesn't make my voice plan more expensive.

They might like the idea of selling "books" without having to pay the overhead of running a physical store, though.

That said, I wonder if students will be able to keep their college e-texts long after they've graduated. Some graduates, like my sister, still have a pretty significant stash of books since they're still relevant to their field of work or their post-grad studies.

So long as ATT is the exclusive carrier for all things Apple, you are in for a mighty long wait.

It depends on the EULA. I rented a few chapters of a book for a class (lost the hardcover in the moving process). I have access to them for 180 days, but I could have bought those as well. Only downside (with mine, anyway) is that it's DRM'd, and had to install the software on my HD in order to view the content. I could prolly access those chapters via another machine, but then I'd also have to install more software. I think that it was like a 3 time max download of the DRM reader.

You wanna know something? I've been looking at that Keynote address about the iPad at Apple.com (I'm up to the hardware part of the promo video towards the end). I'm kinda liking it, but...

-I want to be able to use a different carrier than ATT.
-I want a bigger form factor- 15" display, sub 3 pounds, with up to dual 64g SSD.

Apple meets those two requirements, then they will have another convert on their hands. And the more people are 'converted', the quicker HTML5 kicks Flash to the curb.

Rumors persist in the Apple community that Apple will announce deals with Verizon for the iPhone and iPad at the last minute (their exclusive deal with AT&T expires June 30). The WWDC (Worldwide Developer's Conference) will probably be in late June; that's where Apple might make such an announcement. If I were Apple I wouldn't say anything about a deal with carriers other than AT&T until the last week of June.

That may come, but the only catch -- and I think it's something to seriously consider -- is that the current size is just right for slipping into everything that carries 8 1/2" x 11" notebooks and folders. A 15" laptop, no matter how thin, is juuust big enough to need special accommodations, meaning that a briefcase or attaché could easily be too small for it.

Hmm, Steve Jobs did say that carriers globally would not be announced until June/July.

And I found it odd when he said that ATT wasn't requiring a contract, that it was prepaid. You just know some bean counter there wet himself thinking about the potential revenue generated by suckers, er subscribers, locked into contracts. Jobs also said that ATT was allowing free access to their WiFi hotspots. Don't know if that's in general, or just for the 3G customers.

I'm one of the 10% that will never use a netbook, ipad, itssad. What heck it's called. I'm not compatible with laptops and I constantly drop my cell phone. So it's very easy to predict the lifespan of one if I was ever to get one.

Interesting. Maybe I will get an iPhone if it's on Verizon. I never liked AT&T, which kept me from purchasing an iPhone in the first place. The iPad looks like a useful device, but I will want to try it first, though I wouldn't even consider the purchase until the price drops.

I'd consider dropping my Blackberry for an iPhone if they went to Verizon. It would be a very tough choice...

I can wait. Seriously, I have no need to have the latest gadget. I use my phone to make calls and text messages occasionally. The camera's nice for taking pics when I'm riding. I don't need more than that.

I wouldn't use an iPad much on the road. I'd use it around the house/office. Not sure I would even pay the $130 extra for the 3G capability.

This product will be huge for them. Stay tuned.

I'm kinda thinking the same thing. Wifi is in so many places where I have time to sit around that 3G data would be redundant.

Yup. Most places I go have wifi or are next to a place with it. I think the only thing I'd like the 3g for is navigation, but my phone does that...and I usually just use a map anyway.
