I'm a tad upset

I'd like to get tested to register so I can become a donor for a little girl named Natalie Nakatani but because of my asthma and back issues I can't.

I don't understand why.

I'm going to try to register any way. Even if I'm not a match for her maybe there's someone else I can help.

I can understand why you would be upset but there are qualifications in place to protect the health of the donor and the recipient.

Here is a link to one list of qualifiers that explains more about the asthma component.

Thanks Jsharr. I have EIA, so it looks like I may be okay. But the back thing I'm going to have to talk to them about.

The reason for their spine exclusion is also for the recipient's safety. They do not want to take Bone marrow from people who have received corticosteroids in the past 2 years, since some subtle infections (that would not even be noticed by the donor) are more common in people who have been on corticosteriods. These "mild" infections can be lethal in a bone marrow recipient.

they can have any part of me they can use after I'm done with it. Sadly, there won't be much useable.

Okay thanks. Never had corticosteriods.

I signed up a couple of years ago after my mom was diagnosed with leukemia and multiple myeloma. As it turns out, she doesn't need a marrow transplant, but I'll gladly donate to anyone else who needs it.

My wife wanted to sign up too, but she has "polycystic kidney disease" which is specifically called-out in the "may not register" list.

Good on you, Keith! But at least your wife tried. Thank you.

They don't mean the marrow from that bone. You've donated plenty.
