I took advantage of my ISP's offer to bump me from 256Kbs to 3Mbs for an extra $3/month for two years. Someone please tell me why I did this (i.e. what can I do now that I couldn't do before). I honestly didn't have a use in mind. Grades to follow ... creativity being a plus.

Is this upstream or downstream. There aren't really any "legal" uses for more bandwidth up or down (if you know what I mean, hehe).

Like others have said, there aren't many legal reasons for most normal users, but the ISP doesn't care, they don't take any of the liability for you. The ISP wants you to download movies and music, since that provides a reason for you to continue to purchase faster services as the roll them out, and because they get their bandwidth cheaper the more they buy. They're not really being evil per se, just being a business and doing the thing that results in more profit to them.
As for legit uses, I honestly can't think of any.
For what its worth, I have the 3Mbps plan my service offers, and when I actually use it, I download movies mostly. This has declined since the Blockbuster near me started offering unlimited rentals for $20 a month. Now I just rent DVDs and rip them to the hard drive to watch when I feel like it.

On a site note, I think it's worth pointing out that you're a wealth of knowledge. Thanks for your contributions to this site.

Any bandwidth you uses, costs them. Even though it says "unlimited", they WILL 'pwn' your ass if you start using egregriously.
The only legit thing would be downloading linux isos. Specially the 4.4gb fedora core x64 dvd_iso. How often does that happen though. Not very. Not for the regular user anyways.

And yes, you are right, the ISPs want users that don't really use their full pipe. This allows them to oversell connections. I stand by the fact that they are marketing to those that violate copyrights.

First, thank you for your kind words. The file is actually somewhere around 275 Mbs. Simply ignore Microsoft's instructions not to use that location if you're downloading for only a single computer. And don't worry, it will install only what is needed, not the entire 275 Mbs.
[edit] Oops...you can also pick up a free CD with the full package at Office Depot. You may have to ask for it.

It's nice to be able to stream video off of NASA TV, or play CS without your connection choking when you run into a crowded room. I occasional upload large files to my webserver via ftp, and doing that more quickly is nice. I listen to internet radio a lot (via winamp and shoutcast.com) at 128 kbps, and since 256 kbps is the max speed, it would probably choke a lot if I were on a basic DSL connection.
As long as people are braggin about connections, I'm on a DS-3 capped at 20 Mbps. Unfortunately, it's shared across a college campus. Interestingly, there is so much disgusting virus traffic flooding the intranet that the outside traffic getting through is averaging only about 7 Mbps. Crazy.

I download a lot of legitimate software. Some of it runs into the 600MB range. The download speed comes in very handy.
