Floridians or Floridianites?

What are the rules determining how to call the native people of <whatever>? When it should be <whatever>ians Vs <whatever>nites?

Floridian. The weird one was the first time I heard a Floridian call themselves a Cracker. I mentioned eating smoked mullet and he responds, 'yes, that's what a true Cracker eats.' Then he had to explain for me.

For a state, if not obvious, a legislature may actually set a rule. I seem to recall they did that in Michigan when I lived there to distinguish between Michiganian and Michigander. I forget which was the preferred version.

Here we are Austinites. The nearby town of Leander's populace are referred to as Leanderthals. At the state level, Texans. I always think Arkansans sounds wierd for those in Arkansas.

They're recommended by the US Government Print Office.

Never liked "Hoosier", so I laughed when I heard some stranger say "Hoozit."
