Anyone with diabetes have experience with a dog trained to detect highs/lows?

My son is a type 1 diabetic and is a JDRF ambassador. One of the owners of a company has offered to pay for a trained dog for him. It is a lot of money and I have heard some say they work and others say its not worth the money. We would be getting one for free but I don't want to waste the guys money either. Has anyone had experience with them?
