Is 320Kbps MP3 "overkill" for playing from a cellphone?

I'm using a *lot* of space for my MP3's which I only use when data connection is not available and Pandora gets hiccups. My car's radio is not blue-tooth. I connect cellphone to radio through plain old 1/4-to-1/4 cable from headphone jack to aux-in port.

Would it be prudent to recode @ 128Kbps?
Any application (PC Based) to batch-re-encode everything on a specified directory tree?

Thanks...

How crappy is your car stereo?

If you're going to re-encode, I'd recommend that you don't go any lower than 192 average VBR LAME.

+1

most mp3 players these days come with a pretty good DAC, so 192kbps and VBR is the bare minimum for sound quality if your hearing is still decently good and on car speakers.

You may also want to normalize your entire track list.

I go lower than 192 VBR, plenty, when...

...you have low end headphones or the low end speakers that come with a desktop PC. It sounds better.

I'd say you still want as high as possible but I match it up based on what I have to listen through.

128 here. Over head phones or with car road sounds I don't need more. I own the CDs, or at.least the high quality mp3s or re-downloadable media.

^^^

Right, keep the 320's ...use the lower stuff for portables and that lot.

I mean, Apple is a rip off, everyone knows that ...but wow, the stock iPod ear buds ...jeez, those thing are by far the worst way to listen to music.

320 is way too high for any cellphone and car stereo. Cellphone speakers are lousy enough that you wont be able to discern the extra detail afforded by the higher bitrate. Car stereos aren't necessarily low quality, and theoretically you could enjoy 320kbps for what it's worth, but there's enough road noise that you probably can't hear it.

If your ears are shot and your car has an exhaust leak use 128. If you can tell that it sounds like crap (trust me, it does) then use 192. Keep the better files for when you're playing your music on a decent setup.

My cell phone puts out better sound than my mp3 player, when using headphones.
If you're hooking it up to anything decent, keep the 320. (HTC HD2 running Android.)

I would just keep the higher bit rate, maybe go down to 192 at the lowest. I would just go through your music if you need space, I realized I didn't listen to half the songs in my library after going through it last week. Oh and it's probably an 1/8th cable - 1/4th is usually for instruments and mics.

I'm an audiophile and I listen to lossless FLAC. You name it, I'm blessed with golden ears or damned to a hobby that costs a fortune. Yes, I use a tube amplifier, like the one in the mastercard ads that show people buying ridiculously stupidly expensive things.

As for OP's question actually it would depend on your audio set up in your car and your phone itself to truly understand if 320kbps is even worth the extra space it takes up compared to a lower quality files such as 128Kbps.

~~~~~~For you guys wondering what's the best compromise between file size and sound quality; go for VBR0 encoded files; variable rate, the bit rate varies through the play length of a song as needed.
I wouldn't recommend going bellow 256 Kbps and I can tell the difference between 320 and 256. Not to mention 128 where you end up listening to the ghost of the song. Doesn't matter what your audio setup is, highs are gonna sound like plastic and lows are gonna sound like air. I know some of you think it doesn't make a difference, but it does, a lot. At least 256 Kbps sounds 1/4 decent compared to 44.1 kHz.
BTW, It's beyond me why I prefer vinyl to all of the above.
I could certainly tell a difference between lossless 44.1 khz and any mp3 to cd burn bit rate on a moving car stereo. Probably not so much between 320 and 256, but 128 or 190 something compared to 256 or higher, yes. My ears are trained tho'.
