Interesting suggestion to speed from the DOT...

On my route home tonight on Rt. 3 in Massachusetts, I passed a highway message sign. The kind that tells important messages about the conditions, or even sometimes that zombies are attacking. I've gotten used to the message on this sign - it tells the approximate time to reach the Boston exits based on current traffic conditions. I suppose it could be useful for someone deciding whether to exit before the highway they're on reaches the heavy rush hour traffic.

Anyway, tonight I noticed something unusual. The sign read:

Boston 26 miles
Time 21 minutes
There's only one problem here... the highest speed on the road is 60, and it's more frequently 55 or 50. That math doesn't seem to add up unless the DOT is advocating speeding...

Of course people will go much faster than that and probably beat the estimated time, it is a major freeway after all. But I still wonder what they were thinking.

If you got pulled over for speeding, you could always use the excuse you were just driving as fast as the DoT advised you.
