First Earthquake!

Well that was pretty cool. Hope no one got hurt. Cell service is down all over the place. The whole floor of my building was shaking. Makes a person feel reeeeeeeal tiny when the Earth shakes for hundreds of miles around.

5.9 is a pretty good shaker...hope everyone is okay.

I remember the 1987 Whittier Narrows quake (5.9) when I was in high school in L.A. (had an early 7:30 Chem class); the 1989 Loma Prieta quake (6.9) felt that in Hollywood even though it was in the Bay Area...we were listening to the live coverage of the World Series...and of course the 1994 Northridge quake (6.7). All big enough to give you a good jolt.

I'll still take an earthquake over a tornado or hurricane.

I've heard from others that felt it here in Louisville. I didn't. I did feel one a few years ago, but it was weaker and closer.

My sis just moved to Fredericksburg, VA this week (we're originally from SoCal... we lived through both Whittier and Northridge). She didn't understand why they shut EVERYTHING down for the afternoon, nor what all the fuss was about.

Stationed in Northern Japan during the late 70's. Japan has on the average 7 earthquakes a day. Most not very big, but they told us that if you were in your car and could feel it, it was a big one and to stop and seek a safe haven. I was later stationed in Alaska (Elendorf AFB) and was on the 5th floor of the base hospital when a 5 something earthquake struck. It was swaying the building, made for good times!
