Hellion The Kitten Grows Up And Will Take The "Big Step"

I just returned from the Veterinarian's office. Little Hellion is not so little anymore. She is ready to spay. Her adult teeth are fully in now.

Although I am always rather leery of major operation's risks, I am still very supportive of spaying/neutering. The vast bumper crop of unwanted animals each year has made me a firm believer in this elective operation.

I urge everyone who owns pets to strongly consider-then do it!

Cats aren't people (although we like to think they are). They will get through the operation without worry. Just give her treats and fix a nice warm pad for her to use. Its tough to hurt them, but so much better and healthier in the long run!

But what happens when we spay or neuter all of the cats and then there aren't any more cats?!

+1. Although I do think of myself as her "protector" and "stewardess." I still hate for her to go through this. But far better than giving birth.

If and whenever that happens, I am sure that more cats can come into the world. Only then will there be the good homes waiting for them to arrive.

Wow you waited that long? I did my kitty at 10 weeks old, at 2.1 lbs. This pic is three days after surgery.

And no need to worry about her. Your kitty will be just fine. They don't think about the surgery or why so they don't have an emotional trauma over it like us humans do.

My cat Bo-ner started sticking his swelling bags in my face whenever he could. I always carried a pencil so I could tap his mighty sac while yelling "Bang the Clangers!". Great game. After 1 month of this he was old enough. He never missed them or Bang the Clangers.

Then the feral cats will move in with us like Annie did us. Annie was either abandoned or feral. I tend to think abandoned, personally, given how social she is.

That would be Sakima. He's the evil one. He's always staring at me, planning my death.

We still don't have an official name. People in this house have been calling her big head. She doesn't have a big head, she has a little body!

I waited a little long (aka put it off) till she was not quite 1 yr - so I got the adult price spay versus the lower kitten cost.

And I just went an extra step - had her chipped (man alive that is one freaking big needle as I will someday be moving and I would be beside myself if she every got out and I couldn't find her. The big cat - I am thinking about it still, he irritates me - but he's here as I don't get rid of pets and he's Ming's favorite chew toy. She would be bored and unhappy without him. Cost wasn't bad - for me $65.

A red kitten! I have not had one for over 20 years. Hellion is still a small one at only 4.5 pounds. We were waiting for her to get bigger. Apparently it will never happen. Plus our veterinarian believes that cat has to develop a bit before the operation-but before the first entrus (heat) cycle. That is why it appeared to be cutting it close.

Some of our animals never seem to receive a formal name. We had a dog in the past that was always called "Pit Bull" and a presently 2 cats from the same litter each named "Brother." I would differentiate between the two by labeling them "Brother 1" and "Brother 2" respectively. But 99% of the time they are each simply "Brother."

Anytime is better than No Time! I am glad that she had the spay operation, though. I am glad that you mentioned the Microchip. When Hellion is under anesthesia next week, I requested they inject her with the chip then. I felt that it would be more pain free (and not frightening to her-she trembles in the Examination Room so. Plus there is a far better chance of getting her back if I ever lose her.

I have two female dogs (both spayed), and a female cat (spayed), so yes, this is an idea I can get behind. Having unexpected puppies or kittens around the house can be a hassle.

I've also had a vasectomy for similar reasons.

OMG TUDE!! I remember that vid! I fell in love with your kitties and wanted an orange one, do you remember? i remember that whole story about how you found her and it was snow outside and she sat by the vent to keep warm. Do you ever hear from any of the families that took the kitties? Didn't she have a second litter after that? What ever happened?
