^ my garage door opener has this $9 sensor to prevent stuff like this.

I find it hilarious that someone is smart enough to engineer something like this... yet can't or won't think through the use cases to predict this and prevent it with a $9 sensor.

Just like software these days... completely lacking adult supervision. Oh, and like media too now that they fired all the editors and management.

The thing doesn't work. Yep, either need a sensor to keep the thing from rising OR it needs more power to crush the upper vehicle so you can get the lower vehicle out.

Itís reported that the electricity unit for the garage got flooded, meaning all the power tripped. Presumably, that took out the sensors that would stop the Jeep being crushed like a Coke can. If the electrics did malfunction because of flooding, itís likely that the Subaru underneath has equally irreparable water damage. Double whammy for the owner, by the looks of it.

It's possible, and I've seen something like that on a smaller scale when one of our treatment tables elevated itself during a flood. I asked the manufacturer if that was a feature and they said they didn't design it that way, and thought that the circuit to raise the table got shorted before the power went out. It kept the cushions out of the water too.

I'm impressed with the ability to lift the jeep high enough to cause damage.

Re: the car elevator...

The discussion on ****** included someone who read the newspaper article where it happened (Melbourne, late last year.) Power wasn't out. Heavy rain started flooding the basement, and the system was designed to raise the car to prevent flooding if that happened. Evidently they really didn't foresee what would happen if your other car was parked on top. No shutoff sensor, etc. So yes, it really was caused by failure to include a nine dollar part.
