It's hard to find a bunch of people more selfish and egotistical than mountaineers.

Not really.

I think the photo is of what is known as the Hillary Step (EDIT:, its not, looks like the South Summit), which is a steep section, part rock climb, near the summit on the SE ridge, which is the most popular and easiest route up. There's really only one way up the step and it's the same route coming down, so anybody descending has to wait for a person climbing to clear the route. At some point early in the climbing season (usually early May), Sherpas prep the route including laying in ropes on the step, so Yes, it's a walk up mostly as you stay clipped in to a pre-laid rope.

Problem is of timing. With 200 people going up and using the same timing window, traffic jams results. Even though pretty much everybody is on supplemental oxygen, the pace is glacial, no pun intended. The oxygen helps, but it's still a laborious and slow crawl. When combined with a huge crowd using the same route at the same time, they are getting delayed at assorted locations and are probably running out of supplemental oxygen. They call the heights above 25,000 ft. the "death zone" and without oxygen, many folks cannot move, breath or otherwise do anything. Combined with the cold, they pretty much lay down and die.

And the bodies stay there as it's too much effort for any climber, experienced mountaineer, guided tourists (too many of those) or Sherpa's, cannot risk the effort required to bring the bodies down, they are pretty much only able to look out for themselves.

Jon Krakauer's books "Into Thin Air" as well as "Everest Dreams" describes what's going on.

I'm assuming that the weather window for this particular years climbs have been extraordinarily extended and good, else many more would have died.

EDIT: Seems the death toll has climbed to 8+, though not all a result of a traffic jam.
