Some things you should know about the US Dept. of Education

Be prepared for a rant....

College students, and ex-students, should always check thier student aid history at www.nslds.ed.gov - these are the folks who track your grant and loan activity. If you've ever had the misfortune of having a grant overpayment, or have defaulted on a student loan, they keep the records, and they don't often update them after you've paid off the overpayment, or repaid the defaulted loan. These things can hang around for those credit-score companies to check YEARS after you've settled up your debts with the USDE.

And, the new one: if you have gone to a postsecondary school for a certificate program keyed toward a specific job since 7-1-2006, the school you went to is now uploading your name, social security number, date of birth, course, start and end dates, and loan debt - private and federal, and the amount you owe the school (someone in DC decided that a balance due without any sort of written, signed, statement on the student's part is all of a sudden institutional financing) for cross-reference with the social security administration to create a theoretical matrics on a school's educational value. (they are not doing this for degree programs). EVEN IF YOU DID NOT PARTAKE OF STUDENT AID, the school is obligated to report this information. It all falls under something called "Gainful Employment" disclosure and reporting... WTF?

Yeah, big O-bro will be watching your paycheck!

Congress is also currently discussing plans to raise the bar on income for Pell Grants, so people that might qualify for a grant this year might not qualify next year...

Looks like I got lucky. When I went to community college, it was so cheap that tuition was less than the money I'd save getting student discounts on movies during the semester.

There's a lot to be said for doing two years at a community college and the balance at an institution that offers BA/BS degrees, if that's what you want.

While there are some jobs for which degrees from a specific set of schools are effectively a prerequisite... there aren't nearly as many as college salespeople, ahem, admissions counselors, would lead you to believe.

Well, I just think that linking one's educational aspirations to one's actual earnings & tracking it is really, really creepy.

This isn't just for your mechanics, plumbers, electricians & such. It's for any job related certificate program. CISCO, teaching certificates, LPN, IT certifications, etc. I know we all need more government supervision. I DON'T know that someone who has paid for thier own education without uncle sam's assistance would want thier earnings tracked - or even if a school has a legal right to release the information! Any lawyers out there with a take on that before I have to upload data?

I grew up in SE Ohio, and my parents were from Gilmer County WV, so I know first-hand.

However, I read the Route 33 line in a Columbus Dispatch article a few years back.

I remember you from the Wild Turkey parade in MacArthur Ohio dressed as the great pumpkin.

Around Cleveland the parable has RT.77 in it due to demographics.

What we need is an official West-by-God thread here in Foo.
