Being Young, Broke and Wanting Free Things

So obviously I'm young and broke (ah, college). And I want free things. I've noticed that there are some sites that will mail free samples (FRT is one I think) or give away free things for minor participation, but I don't know where to even start looking. Do any of you know of sites or companies giving away swag or free samples or ANYTHING, really? My overeducated and underachieving self would sincerely appreciate it (if I were allowed to be sincere, hipsters don't care)

For me this worked. I donated time to help others. It seems that when I helped out I always had what I needed.

I am 54 and broke/bankrupt due to unexpected spinal cord tumor surgery in October 2011. I had no disability insurance, unfortunately, and had to declare Chapter 7. Had to sell my Klein road bike to pay my BCBS monthly premium. Will get a hybrid bike when I am recovered and ready to ride again! Cheers, Gary

seems like rather than searching for free stuff, you should be searching for a job. Just saying

freecycle.org is a group that has mail lists in many areas where you can both offer items and ask for items. Generally stuff that may be of use to someone, but is not worth the hassle of trying to sell. I've given away much more than I have received from it, however I do have one bike that came from a Freecycle offer. The admin of my local group has had some differences of philosphy with the main Freecycle and spun off into their own group that is now called "FreeStuff". I don't think it is nearly as busy since the switch, though.

Be reasonable though and don't post on freecycle looking for a free Xbox or Ipod. Nobody is giving those away and I just chuckle when I see such requests.

Seeing as how this is bikeforums, i'll focus on the bikes aspect;

learn to fix your own stuff, dumpster dive at the local LBS's
lots of bike parts get thrown out because they are not cost efficient to repair, seeing as how your own time seems to be free (what with no job and all ) this shouldn't be a problem

He says he's a student. That's a job in itself. Beyond that, we don't know if he has a job or not, just that he's broke and wants some free stuff. When I was a student, I had a job and I was still broke.

Certainly he's getting plenty of free advice.

So it doesn't matter then that I work a full time job? I must unemployed, not underemployed? I pay for tuition, hence being broke. I work for a living, don't worry.

Have you checked out open source software?

Try Gimp, Blender or Open Office.

Sourceforge.com is where you can find a lot of pretty good freeware. That's where I got my copy of GIMP and a couple of other programs. I've been using the Open Office suite and it's pretty comparable to MS Office but a little slow.

Depends on if he lives on campus or with his parents and his age.

You could just bum around and live off of your friends and relatives. Depending on your degree you might have to get used to that anyway.
