What would you do? Babysitters and their boyfriends

There's TV a program called "what would you do?". If you haven't seen it, they place some actors doing odd stuff and fi;m how people react. A few episodes I have seen:

* A mother leaving kids stranded on the street as punishment for yelling. (people got involved)
* A rich mother leaving kids stranded on the street as punishment for yelling. (less people got involved)
* A guy stealing a bike (people got involved)
* A hot girl stealing a bike (people helped her, lol)

When my fiance and I see (or hear about) weird stuff for real, we wonder if there should be an episode about it.

I saw something weird yesterday that had to do with teen-aged babysitters and their boyfriends. The neighbors were out and hired a babysitter to watch their 2 little girls (8 & 6). But the babysitter looked really young to me, like 15 or 16 at the most (maybe it's the norm around here, I don't know). She was even shorter than my own son who is 12. IMHO she needed a babysitter herself. But anyway... off they go and soon after, some older teenage boy (old enough to drive) appears on the scene. He is passionately welcomed on the driveway (2 little girls not on sight at the time, were probably sleeping) and then he goes inside. I shrug, is not my business.

Today's morning a wake up, teenage boy car is still there, so he spent the night. Then the neighbors arrived and I'm thinking "there's gonna be some drama". But no drama, few minutes later the father of the little girls was outside cracking jokes with the babysitter's boyfriend.

Act number 3: I'm again outside, watching my kids ride their bikes up and down. A cellphone rings, a neighbor parent picks it up, talks a few seconds hung up. Quickly tells something to teenage boy who almost ran to his car and left. Another car came in, a older couple gets out, shake hands with the parents. Teenage babysitter gets out and greet the newly arrived couple as "mom and dad". Babysitter gets in the car with her mom and dad and leaves...

My take? I don't know. It looked like the teenage babysitter was sneaking the boyfriend in. But then, it looked that the parents were OK with it. Maybe the sitter and her boyfriend did behave when the little girls where on sight... I don't know. Do the babysitter parents know? Maybe, maybe not. Is the sitter older that she looks? Maybe, maybe not. It that something teenage girls usually do when baby-sitting younger kids? Maybe is common, I don't know.

It sounds like the parents of the kids being watched were okay with the boyfriend being there. Evidently the parents of the girl doing the babysitting were not okay with the boyfriend being there, since he took off rather quickly.

I never let sitters have friends over when they were watching my daughter. It's too easy for them to get distracted and not pay attention to the kid they're supposed to be watching.

I wouldn't let a sitter have friends over unless I knew them all fairly well and knew I could trust them to be there too. 15-16 is old enough to baby sit, but does depend on the kid.

I know I would let my nephew and his girlfriend baby sit in a heart beat. They both are great with my son and he loves both of them. They would pay more attention to my kid then each other.

And you forgot the most important detail, was the baby sitter cute? She's just a few years away from being 18, you know?

What gets me, is the way teens act at our neighborhood pool. The girls wear practically nothing and go there to hang out and let their boyfriends grope them in front of everyone but their parents.

Well, if I ever found out the babysitter had had an overnight guest, that would be the last time she was hired. Especially considering the hasty departure of the boy before the parents show up.

When I was a teenager and had GFs, I was always VERY DISCRETE. Few times we had opportunities to stay at somebody's place but we always declined. It always looked like the patrons were offering harbor because they wanted in on the fun. It was a big red flag that we always avoided. I would rather work my butt off polishing the floors at my local supermarket and pay our own room. Or take the time to find a desolated beach (the islander's way).

Don't know... maybe hotels now verify the age on the drivers license b4 renting a room... I don't recall they doing that back in the day.

We know our sitters well. If the parents of all parties involved know, and we know all parties, I would not mind. We have one girl who does bring her boyfriend, as we are glad to have him in our house, he is an upstanding young man and she is an equally upstanding young woman. I like that our boys can see what a real relationship between young adults looks like.

If the babysitter was sneaking a young man or woman into our house, I would not take kindly too it and that person would not be used again.

Then again, if it were at jsharr's house...we'd more than likely never see the babysitter or her boyfriend again.

Yes you would, but the dry rub would make you think it was chicken, or pork loin.

This is FL... no idea about the age but I would be surprised if it was anything older than 15... 16 *maybe*. Boyfriend looked 20ish. But then again, she *could* be a younger looking 16 and the dude *could* be an older looking 17. I told the story to a friend of mine that has been living in central FL for a lot longer than myself and he tells me it is quite common around these parts. Behaviors than on our native Island are reserved for college kids, here you see high school kids and middle school kids doing it and nobody raises an eyebrow. He mentioned that teen pregnancy in FL is about 31% so, this kind of thing probably happens a lot. It's like Beverly Hills 90210 but without the money.

I still shrug.... If I say I'm against adults letting teenagers be frisky in my place, people will flame/troll/LOL'd for being "old". If I say I'm OK with providing love rooms for teenagers I'll be flamed/troll/LOL'd for corrupting young minds. So I just shrugs.... meh

I heard a stat recently that teen pregnancy rates are 1 out of 3. That's 1) insane, 2) horrible, and 3) makes me scared as hell for the future.

Yea, things do change based on circumstances. At 16 I was the one called when there were doubts about dangerous critters (mainly is that snake poisonous). BUT I was alos an obvious choice for neighbor problems.

Still I would not want the carbon copy of me coming over without prior permission or at least immediate notice.

If he is being snuck in that is a problem no matter who he is.

I blame the interwebz. Prior generations would tell their offspring all manner of fictitious stuff in an effort to prevent unapproved relations (not to mention there generally was one adult in the house at all times and girls were married off at a tender age...). But now we have WebMD to disprove the possible afflictions (cooties isn't a valid deterrence anymore) and any number of free 'how-to' sites of the adult content variety.
