...and the omnigoogle does it again...

A little background:

I play games. Like with internet forums, you get in-game nick names. For popular games there are fan-created sites where you can lookup these in-game nick names, compare stats and stuff. Often, these are called "killboards".

Now the story:

Two friends of mine have been killing each other in-game for about 2 weeks now. They have a bet to see which one can kill the other one most times during the month. The one that was loosing had a 5 kill streak and tweeted that he was now winning. So I google'd his in-game nick name to get the killboard links and go see the stats. When I google, I was surprised to see his real life name on the results, along with his county of residence and a long list of "video playlist" of questionable content...lol

The data-mining was so extensive that one site even provided a graph of which days of the week my friend prefers brunettes and which days he like blondes. I've known this guy for over a decade and I know exactly what his types are. I can assure you, the "playlists" were darn accurate, down to the occasional foot fetish.

And the lesson of the story: Don't browse multiple stuff at the same time... specially questionable stuff.

PS: Tweeting... @my-friend... happy blondei-monday lol!

Sounds like he uses the same nickname for his pr0n (playlists? really?), online gaming, and things related to his real life. Oops.

Well, living in his Mom's basement, I'm sure he doesn't get out much to meet real live women.

No no no... he used "incognito mode" browsers and all kinds of virtual sneakiness. It was the adds that tied all up. Let me illustrate the process with MS Paint:

After the data mining is done, the add company now sells these reports to everybody, including prom sites. When I told my friend about he google his nickname and first search had interesting results about hardware stores selling lawnmowers. "It makes sense, I was browsing lawnmower equipment"... my friend said. "Check the stores, I bet they are all in your county" I told him. And they were. And he said "yeah, data mining all right, but no prom here" he said... "Turn safe search off" I said....

My Friend - "Oh Snap.. they made playlists with every video I watched from this PC and listed them up as playlists results for all my nicknames and my real name and my county of residence!".

I'm not sure if they got the county because of other stuff he browsed, or because the IP is listed as being from that county. Either way, is creepy.

A friend was watching prom on sneaky mode and got discovered and listed by google. Now searching for his nickname gives out his county, all known nicknames, real name and playlists of the prom he likes.

You can tell google not to track you and it seems to work. You can also install "Ghostery" which disables the links to Google, Facebook, Twitter and a whole host of ad analytics. For instance, this page has 6 cross link/trackers collecting data about us.

That's interesting. It makes sense if its the same ad company feeding the ads to a single IP address. Is he on a static IP address plan? using an ad blocker? I wonder how a virtual machine effects that.

Is this part of that stupid crap google is doing wherein your online friends can see what you're searching for and vice versa?

Dunno, but I know that Bing is promoting the 'social search' function hard and heavy...

I can't imagine anybody wanting everybody in their social network to see everything they've searched for.

I don't particularly mind that people know I like legs and buns.

Well... the foot fetish is still under investigation. But the Monday-Blonday root cause has already been found. There's a hot blond that works at my friend's workplace. They happen to work together once a week... on Mondays. He claims to be innocent, but we pay him a visit (works at a restaurant) and spotted the blond. The name on the blond's tag does appear on my friend's "playlists", so we know he want that cake.

This is one of those things that decades after we will still remember and laugh about... ATM, I'm trying to figure out how to send a youtube video to a cellphone via MMS. I want to figure it out before next Monday so I can send this to my friend when he's at work:
