End of Decade? probably not. There were people in the early 70's that still had hand cranked phones. You'll have to wait until all the oldtimers pass on.

There's some question of how much longer kids will be taught traditional cursive handwriting. The ability to speak a sentence that doesn't contain obscenity also seems to be getting rarer by the year.

Perish the thought. Both would be tremendous losses. We'd be left with nascar, MS, and apple for revolutionary advancements in technology.

re landlines, this is the first school year (going back to 06-07) that one of our kids' classroom phone lists has one set of parents w/ no landline. Not unusual, maybe even typical, to find single parents on these lists w/ no landline, but once you get to multiple adults in the household there seems to be a preference for keeping a single central phoneline.

Broadcast tv
Land line phones
Broadcast TV is actually gaining in popularity. Sale of antennas are really on the rise as people are getting sick of cable/dish services sky rocketing prices. Use the combination of internet services like Netflix for entertainment, and the antenna for news and some live events. My neighbors are about to change to this setup, so I will have to rewire another house soon to get rid of cable for antenna.

More accurately, my kids being in diapers. But anyway, big +1 there! We're restarting potty training with the boy (he kind of gave it up when the girl was born).

I've talked with land line installers. They expect their jobs to last about 5 more years.

There may be extreme examples of situations like yours that endure, or the phone company may just decide that continuing to support your phone does not make sense. I see your physics and raise you economics.

That sounds like my condition. I make due with TV and supplement it with what I can see over the internet. But my internet comes via the same cable the TV would, if I had TV. But the Internet, I need, the cable programming is only a preference.

How are printed books going to disappear? You think libraries are going to go away? Do you think every book written has been put into electronic form?

Sorry, but that is just a poor prediction... as bad as "the paperless office."

I can't see traditional POTS line phones disappearing entirely, because they in will be used as backups for digitally switched and VIOP for years to come in businesses.

There was an article on that in yesterday's Sunday paper; Seattle-ites have a bigger shock driving an hour or 2 to find no cell service than Binghamtonians or capital district residents...

My parents live in an area where they have shoddy cell service and it's impossible to get cable or satellite signal. They finally got the internet this year by using a really crappy signal from a cell phone modem, but there's only one company that can get signal to them and even that comes and goes. Their land line isn't going anywhere. Hell we had a party line when I was growing up even into the late 80's. I think it got replaced sometime around 1991 or so.

And yet in remote places in India everyone seems to enjoy adequate cell phone signals. I don't understand this.

One more thing that will likely go away is the personal check (although I still pay bills that way).
